Book Description
The innovative YogaKids(r) program offers more than just
poses: It blends traditional yoga and its benefits with
new theories of multiple learning styles in a
comprehensive, imaginative, and playful approach to
education.
The best-selling YogaKids(r) video (a Parent's Choice
award winner) has been helping kids-and their parents-discover
the pleasures and benefits of yoga for more than seven
years. With this book, Marsha Wenig's fun and child-friendly
course is expanded and enriched for parents, teachers,
and caregivers.
YogaKids(r) presents more than 50 carefully selected
poses, in clear, easy-to-follow, color photographs,
paired with special activities that stimulate children's
verbal, spatial, and artistic skills. The book includes
special yoga routines to cover a multitude of common
situations, such as calming down, getting ready for a
test, or even riding in a car, as well as help for
children with special needs. Parents learn the physical
and emotional benefits of each pose; children discover
that learning is fun, that exercise feels good, and that
taking care of their bodies is easy.
About the Author
Marsha Wenig, R.Y.T., creator of YogaKids(r), is a
certified yoga instructor and a "Yoga for the
Special Child" graduate. As an expert in the field
of yoga for children, she has written widely on the
subject for Yoga Journal, Fitness, Parent Guide, and
other publications. She is the cofounder and director,
with her husband, Don Wenig, of YogaKids(r) International
and Dancing Feet Yoga Center in Michigan City, Indiana.

Reader Review
Not much to do about yoga, July 28, 2003
Reviewer: sdsford2
from Lansing, MI USA
If you are looking for a book to introduce children to
yoga asana and yoga theory, this one probably isn't the
best choice. The poses are few, and are fairly simple;
too simple for elementary children. The strength of the
book lies in the group activities and games. The group
lessons lean more toward team and trust -building, which
would be great in a classroom, church group or camp. As a
children's yoga teacher, I was disappointed in the actual
yoga content, but I'll keep it as a reference in case I
need a filler activity.

Book Description
Designed to involve every member of the family, the yoga
program in this book focuses on those children who are
ready for a challenging and fun group of movements that
involve both mind and body. Children are guided, using
pictures and words, into poses with siblings or friends,
with parents, grandparents, or caring adults. Children
are first encouraged to do a series of stretching
postures that escalate into vigorous warm-ups to energize
the body, focus the mind, and strengthen the spirit.
Other exercises are designed to give children an
experience of inner strength, allowing them to develop
concentration and stimulate the creative abilities innate
in every child. Parents are encouraged to play with their
children rather than watch them play.
About the Author
Teressa Asencia has practiced yoga since 1969 and has
taught yoga for 20 years. She has written and produced
several yoga videos and three yoga television series. Her
series Welcome to Hatha Yoga was shown daily on CBC-TV in
Canada. Her Yoga for Stress series was shown on the
Women's Network across Canada daily for two years. She
lives in Montreal, Quebec.

Best Yoga Book, August 4, 2003
Reviewer: Kilkenny Walter-Tremblay
from Philadelphia, PA
Playful Family Yoga: For Kids, Parents and Grandparents
by Teressa Asencia is a remarkable book that is as
inspirational as it is engaging.
I am a professional yoga teacher and have yet to see a
more accessible book appropriate for all levels and all
ages. The text is clear and the pictures are helpful. The
book reads smoothly as a cohesive unit or you can have
fun reading various chapters depending upon your interest
or mood. The author is clearly an expert in her field
which is crucial especially in a field where so much is
published without experience and expertise to back it.
I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the
practice of yoga no matter what age or level of expertise.
It reinspired my practice of over 23 years and yet would
make a great gift for someone who has never come into
contact with yoga before either.

Reader Review
A wonderful way to teach your child self-calming!,
March 29, 2002
Reviewer: Liane Gentry Skye
(see more about me at Amazon.com)
from Myrtle Beach, SC USA
As the mother of two boys with autism, I am always on the
lookout for programs that might help reduce hyperactivity
and tics. Yoga For the Special Child has helped in that
quest.
This book provides clear visuals as well as written
directions on how to coax your child to engage in various
postures and breathing exercises, first passively, and in
later stages, actively.
I actually began the yoga with my son just as he was
beginning to fall asleep. As the weeks have moved on, I
have introduced some of the postures that require his
active participation.
Very simply, he loves the entire process---and yes, it
does leave him much more relaxed.
While I found myself raising my eyebrows at some of the
claims of benefit enjoyed by severely disabled
participants in the writer's yoga school, I do see where
consistent use of yoga can provide a child with the means
to self regulate hyperactivity and tics.
I do recommend the book in that light, and I am grateful
to have found it just as I feared we would have to
medicate for hyperactivity.
It's also a fun bonding experience. I finally have
something I can do with my son for a change!

This book is now available. It is a beautiful book with

also information for teachers and parents.
Preschool perfection!, June 5, 2003
Reviewer: A reader from West Dummerston, VT United
States
A beautifully illustrated book. Accurate and colorful. My
class of preschoolers related to it wonderfully, using it
as a guide for their own Yoga poses. They invented
several and we took pictures to add to this stunning book.
This Yoga work interested and calmed some of my more
challenging students. Well worth the investment of money
and time. Highly recommend.

Reader Review
My son was entranced!, January 2, 2003
Reviewer: A reader from Washington, DC United States
I have to admit I was a little disappointed when I first
looked at this book. But as all too often happens, we
adults fail to see the true joy in something simple. The
pictures of a child doing yoga instantly entranced my
son, and the hand drawn backgrounds lend a sense of
playfulness. My son who is four has been mimicking my
yoga poses since he was around 10 months old, but this is
the first time he has seen someone his own size in these
poses.
I found he lacked the patience to listen to the
descriptions that accompany the pictures, but would talk
about the pictures, ask questions, and willingly try the
poses himself, often holding a pose for 30 or more
seconds. Anyone with a 4-year-old knows that 30 seconds
is an eternity. My 19-month-old daughter wasn't
interested in the book but enjoyed copying her brother.
My son has been asking to practice with me more often
lately, bringing his own mat when he sees me setting up
for my practice. He asks for his favorite poses by name
or by finding them in the book.
This book has also deepened by own yoga practice. My
children have reminded me that yoga does not have to be
so serious. It is okay to giggle about tipping over
during tree pose or to stop for a quick hug after
triangle pose. I had forgotten these simple things as I
worried about getting my poses just right.
This book lacks this warning, but remember to let the
child lead you. While I expect an hour or more of myself,
I have found my son seems to lose interest after 15 or 20
minutes - but that is fine. Instead, I will continue to
cherish the time he practices with me but I also get a
little more time when he curls up and goes to sleep
beside me on his mat while I finish my practice each
night.

Nice Photos, clear descriptions, January
19, 2000
Reviewer: Yoga Teacher from Massachusetts
This children's Yoga book is a good reference. I teach
Children's Yoga, and my students enjoy looking at the
photos in the book after our class and picking out the
poses we did. they love the fact that the poses are
demonstrated by other children. Nice spiral binding makes
it easy to flip the pages to show the kids what we are
going to do next!
