Individual needs are complex and diverse so a voluntary flexible and progressive
learning pathway is required for individuals within and between education,
training and work.
This learning pathway should promote new learning opportunities offering access
to flexible accreditation, qualifications, personal and social support.
Initial Contact:
Community Education attracts
people who wish to learn and progress but lack the self-confidence, learning
skills and basic skills in areas such as literacy and numeracy. This extends to
those who may find it difficult to seek out the service they need.
By building
confidence in learning across a wide range of contexts, methods, subjects and
topics, learning is seen as a natural activity to enjoy.
In this way, pre-certification
courses act as incentives for participation and further progression in education
and training.
Goal Setting:
Community Education facilitates
people who can identify the educational direction they require, but may need
personal, educational and vocational guidance to facilitate progression toward
their goal.
Education and training courses at this stage operate within a broad
time frame with a series of achievable and definite goals, leading to
certification on a modular basis, for example FETAC type progression.
Structured Learning:
Community Education guides
people who are capable of participating in structured group-based learning
programmes and to identify the service they require.
They are clearly focused on
their goals and posses the skills, commitment and confidence to achieve
qualifications within a specific time frame, such as in further education and
onwards to third level opportunities and/or employment.
