"Participants … improve their knowledge and expand their thinking …improve their communication skills, grow in self awareness, self confidence and self esteem, leading to discovery of their own gifts and talent." Coordinator, Mahon Resource Centre

In gathering the data for this report, centres were asked to record the number of adults taking courses within their organisation.  Each adult participant was counted only once.
Therefore, if a particular adult learner participated in more than one course, that adult was only counted once.
The number of adults partaking in courses in the networks that were funded by the totalled 2,854.  While the majority of learners counted once in each community education centre, are female 83%, the number of males participating in education at community level is significant at 17%.
There has been an increase in male participation from 2000 where men totalled 9% of learners.
This is a positive development within Community Education.

In all areas, women are the primary participants.  The City Centre, Togher and Bishopstown show the highest rate of male participation, while the Glen/Ballyvolane, Churchfield/Gurranabraher and Mahon/Blackrock show the lowest rates of male participation.  The data collected in this survey does not provide reasons for the variance in participation.
