Various studies have shown the positive effects massage can have on the respiratory, immune, digestive, muscular, nervous, circulatory, hormonal and eliminatory systems. One example of such a study which has illustrated these effects showed significant weight gain for premature babies who were massaged regularly, who gained up to 47% more weight than non-massaged babies. (Touch Research Institute, Tiffany Field et al) These babies also showed increased circulation, respiration and elimination, as well as improved sleeping patterns and greater relaxation and were discharged earlier. |

Research specific to the benefits of infant massage has been ongoing since the mid-1970’s. This research has been conducted at various institutes and with infants with a variety of different circumstances, such as prematurity, exposure to drug use in utero, infants experiencing motor problems, and more. All of these categories of babies benefited from the nurturing touch of infant massage. See the following researchers. | |
