Recruitment and Barracks Building
More and more troops were needed as the war with France continued and the government, realised like Robert Boyle that an appeal to the Irish public should be in the language in use among them. In 1806 an appeal for recruits for King George's Army appeared, laying down terms of enlistment and re-enlistment, pay and pension, increases and deductions, services at home and abroad. It began as follows:
OIFIG AN CHOGDAIDH A MBAILE ATHA CLIATH, The war with France demanded a greatly increased accommodation for troops. The military in Ireland grew to 50,000 in 1805, including 20,000 militiamen, and the barracks at Fermoy 1806 and 1809 and one at Tralee 1812 were built.  The Old Barracks |
