ARMY SONGS

These are two songs which were found in Niall Brunicardi's book which were sung in the army.

So rattle your drums and blow your bugles - it's time to sing!

A New Song On The German War

Price One Penny

Once more the battle cry is raised,
The sword of vengeance drew,
All Europe is now in a blaze,
I'm sorry to tell you,
Where many an Irish heart to-day
His life-blood freely yield.
Some sleep beneath the roaring deep,
And more on the battle-field.

The German thief now we must blame
For all this dreadful fray,
But France and Russia do unite,
And sorely he will pay
For all his wicked treachery,
The truth to you I'll tell -
While Britannia rules the waves, my boys,
She'll feed him with shot and shell.

Let England be not be one bit afraid
That Ireland will her not betray,
For like soldiers brave our land we'll save
Or die upon that day.
No German brute will e'er take root
Or on old Ireland stand,
For the Lord is with us day and night,
He'll save our native land.

God bless our Irish Volunteers,
They are ready for the call
To defend the land that gave them birth
Or by the bayonet fall,
Though there's many an Irish heart to-day
His life blood freely yields
While fighting on the stormy sea
Or on the battle-fields.

Now to conclude and finish,
May the war be soon at an end,
The Lord now in his mercy
Our grievances will end.
This war it is a dreadful shock,
And the country may suffer sore,
But may the Heavens send that peace may come
Now and for evermore.

Price One Penny

O war is declared we are sorry to say
Between those mighty nations on land and on sea
And those thundering cannons they do loudly roar
Success to our boys leaving Erin's green shore.

Success to our soldiers that crossed o'er the sea
To fight that mighty nation they call Germany,
Their courage is brave, on their features a smile,
God bless those brave sons of Erin's green isle.

Germany first declared this cruel war
Which called on our Reserves to serve out abroad
And leave mothers and children to mourn behind;
God bless those brave sons in a far distant clime.

Our Reservists when leaving gave three hearty cheers,
The bands playing airs of the Irish Volunteers.
While our heroes are absent far over the foam
Our Irish Volunteers will defend Erins home.

We hope this war will soon come to an end
Bringing peace once more between nations again,
And with a Cead Mile Failte and kind greeting smile
We will welcome our boys back to Erins green isle.

Mothers and sons be cheerful and gay
For your husbands and sons that crossed the blue sea.
God bless our soldiers, their courage they'll show
Against those foreign tyrants the German foe.
