Weston Aerodrome
Due
to my persistence, South Dublin County Council brought an action
into the High Court against unauthorised development at Weston Aerodrome.
Also An Bord Pleanála significantly limited development at
Weston Aerodrome due to local opposition that I worked in support
of.

Previous statements on Weston Aerodrome
Following a number of years in working on behalf
of the residents in Lucan, particularly those residents in Weston
Park, Kew Park and Cooldrinagh, in association with local Residents
Associations and the Combined Action on Weston, I was delighted
when, arising from my representations to South Dublin County Council
in September 2002, (Details of my representations by way of a Motion
to the Planning Meeting of the Lucan/Clondalkin Area Committee on
17th September 2002 are included below), The Council pursued the
matter of Unauthorised Development at Weston Aerodrome, Lucan into
the High Court.
Judgement on this matter is pending. I appealed
subsequent granting of planning permission to An Bord Pleanála
in support of the local community, and I was delighted when on 9th
December 2003, An Bord Pleanála refused planning permission
to that part of the Weston Aerodrome's Planning Application which
represented the future development and expansion at Weston Aerodrome.
On this occasion I again wrote to the Local Residents on 9th December
2003 as follows:
9th December 2003.
To: The Residents of Lucan.
Re: Breaking News
on Weston Aerodrome.
Dear Resident,
I am sure you are aware of my work in the interest
of the proper planning and development of Lucan. In particular
I refer to my vigorous efforts to support local Residents Associations
and Community Groups who have objected to the proposed expansions
and developments at Weston Aerodrome.
I am delighted to report that today An Bord
Pleanála notified me of its decision to REFUSE
PLANNING PERMISSION for that part
of the Weston Aerodrome proprietors proposals to extend
and develop Weston Aerodrome, which was previously Granted Planning
Permission by South Dublin County Council. Whilst other proposed
works to upgrade existing structures at the Aerodrome were granted
planning permission, specifically the demolition of existing hangers
and construction of a new larger hanger, office and clubhouse,
car parking spaces, aircraft parking and new vehicular access
off the R403 Regional Road (Celbridge Road), this effectively
allows for the upgrading of existing structures at this location
with a new access route.
The following quote from An Bord Pleanála
today in its First Schedule of its decision represents a major
significant victory for the local community in Lucan and justifies
the position I have taken as your Local Independent Councillor
on this issue during the past number of years:
"It is considered that the development of
Hangers A-E and associated car parking would constitute a greatly
expanded development resulting in a significant intensification
of use of Weston aerodrome which would be inconsistent with the
existing use and character of the aerodrome. The Board is not
satisfied, on the basis of the submissions made in connection
with the planning application and the appeal, that such intensification
of use would not seriously injure the amenities of the area or
of property in the vicinity. The development of Hangers A-E would,
therefore, contravene the zoning provisions for the area
to preserve a green belt between development areas and
would be contrary to the proper planning and development of the
area."
Please be assured of my continued work on your
behalf.
Yours sincerely,
Cllr. Derek Keating MCC, PC
