Census Records at National Archives
There are remnants of the 1821 Census of Ireland available for parts of a few counties. Later 19th century census records were shredded by the authorities of the time. Full records are available for 1901 and 1911 on microfilm and in hardcopy although the National Achives prefer you to view microfilm. Viewers can print images; you buy a card at the Reading Room counter costing €2.54 for five shots. I set out below main part of an image of the 1911 census. The data is better than in the 1901 census as it added questions on how many years people were married and how many children they had born alive. This new data can then be used by you for pinpointing a marriage date and for finding details of children who died young.
Look also at the forms listing the surnames for the whole street or townland. On these you will see whether or not the property was occupied or leased and you will also see data on the quality of the house, number of rooms, windows in front. Census forms for rural areas also carry a sheet which lists the number and types of farm outbuildings. You can compare this data with the earlier data from the House Books of the Griffith Valuation to see how the farm developed - 1954 -1901 - 1911.
