What is Wavinmania?

Wavinmania is the name of the new ‘first ever’ band at Glenageary Killiney National School, Killiney, Co Dublin.

It seemed that authentic wind instruments like the clarinet and saxophone etc sounded well alongside the rather unorthodox wind and percussion instruments made from Wavin pipes.   It therefore seemed like a fun idea to start up a ‘mixed band’ which would possibly be a more appealing introduction to the joys of playing music together.

What is unique about Wavinmania?

  • It is not like any other school band in that roughly half the instruments are constructed from quality Wavin piping and products making the band more varied and practically accessible to interested young musicians.
  • It combines the unorthodox with the authentic in that Wavin piped instruments augment the traditional recorders, clarinets and saxophones adding a new dimension which is also very economical and it s approach.  Traditional classroom percussion instruments are very costly to purchase; in this band, most of the Wavin instruments have been made by the pupils during previous projects at GKNS, amazing as it might sound!
