A standard studio monitor in an industrial television set and usually sits on a small trolley for wheeling it around the studio, it may also be suspended in a monitor cradle from a lighting telescope or motorised hoist. They are a facility for studio crew, presenters, guests and audience. A studio audience can watch film and video clips on them as well as sometimes seeing themselves and waving.

When rehearsing and recording TV Studio programmes is is necessary for members of the studio crew to be able to see what the cameras are shooting. A sound operator may need to see if the boom or fish pole mic is in shot or if it is casting an unwanted shadow. In simple Chroma Key/CSO Blue Screen effects shots it is always necessary for studio crew and actors to see the composite picture.

Studio monitors are sometimes built into the programme set or used free standing, occasionally a video wall (videwall) made up of four, nine or sixteen monitors will be used.
