Diploma in Theology
(fulfilling requirements for C.P.E.)

Duration: One year: Sept to May or Jan to Dec
Entry: Open to all

The Kimmage Diploma in Theology is recognised by the Health Care Chaplaincy Board for those who wish to take it as part of their requirements for their Clinical Pastoral Education. Apart from following courses in the general Diploma in Theology, participants will be required to follow courses in areas of moral theology, medical ethics (parts I and II), and sacraments of healing.

Following principally the same course-work as the general Diploma in Theology, participants will present assignments in a number of areas of study. These courses allow participants span a wide range of topics, and help form a basis for other work:

  • Faith and History of Israel
  • Luke / Acts
  • Mission Theology
  • Doing the Truth (Moral Life)
  • Liturgical Spirituality

Additional courses are chosen from a wide selection of topics, including:

  • The Church
  • Introduction to Anthropology
  • Theology of Ministry
  • Gospel and Gospels
  • Adult Faith Development
  • Social Ministries in the Church
  • Faith and Revelation

A number of courses facilitate candidates in the area of spirituality:

  • Introduction to Spirituality
  • Engaging with Theology
  • Kinetic Spirituality
  • Themes in John
  • The Inner Self
  • Partners in Faith
  • Faith Journeying

All participants preparing for C.P.E. work are required to participate in the Pastoral Reflection Programme, and a course on Pastoral Skills.

The Pastoral Programme allows participants to reflect critically on their experience of ministry. In this way, they are able to bring their study to bear on their experience, and allow their experience inform their study of theology and scripture.

Participants are encouraged to engage in their own reflection and research in theology, to take an active part in class discussions and to acquaint themselves with the issues of the day.

Tutorial help and spiritual direction are available, if required, and there is access to an excellent library on the campus.
