MA in Theology

The KMI Institute of Theology and Cultures offers an MA in Theology by research and thesis.

Duration: Twenty-one months (or two academic years) from the date of admission to the Master's Register.

Entry: Approved Bachelor Degree (minimum second class honours) in field of studies related to the subject matter of the Master Degree.

Applications are also considered from candidates
* who have passed a Master Degree qualifying examination; or
* who hold an NCEA Graduate Diploma at Credit or Distinction levels in field of studies related to the proposed area of study; or
* who hold other qualifications acceptable to the Board of Admissions.

Candidates work through the Director of Postgraduate Studies, who facilitates them in a choice of a research director. All applications for the Master Degree must be approved by the National Council for Educational Awards before the commencement of research.

The Institute is particularly interested in encouraging higher studies in areas such as:

  • Faith and Cultural Identity
  • The Church through Culture and History
  • Cross-cultural mission
  • Inculturation
  • Ecumenics and Mission
  • Anthropology and Faith
  • Liturgy and Cultures
  • Bible and cultural issues

as well as in any area which will deepen an understanding of how the church continues to serve the gospel in culture and cultures.

The KMI offers an expertise in serious and creative theological work, gained through the combined inter-cultural experience of its teaching body. Through its research degrees, it contributes to the discussion within the Irish Church on new and emerging cultural issues, and on how these enter into dialogue with the gospel. Its cross-cultural environment offers a context for the study of faith and culture, whether for Ireland or elsewhere.

Candidates will have contact with a highly motivated and experienced academic staff, who bring with them insights and perspectives of various cultural contexts.
