HUDDERSFIELD
COLLEGE PRIZE MEDALS.
THE
MORPETH AND CARLISLE GOLD MEDALS.
The Morpeth medal appears to have been the first of the Huddersfield College prize medals. An announcement was made at the prize-giving of December 1840 that Lord Morpeth was to present a yearly prize of £5 for the best English composition, in the form of a gold or silver medal. That prize was noted in the awards at June 1841. Lord Morpeth was the eldest son of the Earl of Carlisle and the medal was renamed after he succeeded to that title in 1848. He died in 1864 without making provision for the continuation of the award, and although it continued to be made as the Carlisle medal it was in fact presented by various donors.

mention is made of the Carlisle medal in these years. It had been
announced in 1864 that the medal would be given biennially in
future. One wonders if this practice had been introduced,
unannounced, in 1858.
