HUDDERSFIELD COLLEGE PRIZE MEDALS.
THE SCHOLARS.

The College took both day and boarding pupils, the latter being drawn from throughout England and even from Ireland. No special effort has been made to assemble biographical details of the prize-winners. The following notes which have come to hand may serve to illustrate some of their backgrounds and careers.

Enoch Mellor 1841 Son of a woollen manufacturer at Salendine Nook, he attended Edinburgh University and became a Congregational minister.
Jonathan Bates 1842 Came from Edinburgh High School. He was a teacher at the College from 1845-1850.
Henry de Paiva 1842 Died of overstudy at Cambridge University
William Henry Willans1848 & James Edward Willans 1846 Sons of William Willans, a Huddersfield merchant, one of the founders of the College. James Edward was made a Freeman of Huddersfield in 1918.
William Henry Broadbent 1849 Son of a small manufacturer at Longwood, he became physician to Queen Victoria and King Edward VII and was created a baronet.
William Willis 1850 Became a barrister in London and a Member of Parliament
William Henry Crossland 1851 The son of a local quarry master, he fulfilled the promise of his early talent as architect of the Royal Holloway College.
Albert Shaw 1857 Became a commercial traveller in the woollen trade.
J K James 1861 Became an architect in Hull.
E J H Booth 1862 Son of Samuel Booth, a Huddersfield surgeon.
J Spottiswood Cameron 1862 Was Huddersfield's second Medical Officer of Health and later served Leeds in the same capacity.
George William Morrison 1867 Became Town Clerk of Leeds and received a knighthood.
O R Jones 1867 The son of the minister of Holy Trinity Church
William John Dodds 1869 Studied medicine at Edinburgh University
Robert Bruce 1870 Son of the pastor of Highfield Chapel, he attended Aberdeen University, became controller of the London postal service and was knighted in 1913.
J F Welsh 1871 Became Bishop of Trinidad.
D F E Sykes 1872 Studied law in London and practised as a solicitor in Huddersfield. His History gold an early indication of his interests which culminated in his History of Huddersfield.
Robert Lawford Knaggs 1874 Son of a Huddersfield surgeon he became an ophthalmic surgeon at Leeds Dispensary.
