[768] From The History of the [IT:Town of Catherine, NY[:IT]: "Landed inMassachusetts, June 1, 1635, William's parentage cannot be found...Thegenealogy speaks of Thomas, born in 1603, who may have been a brother. He took oath December 7, 1639, and was admitted as a free man ofMassachusetts in 1638. Later, he removed to Connecticut, and withothers settled on a piece of land cleared along the Long Island Sound,October 3, 1639, called "Pequanoche," which name was changed toStratford in 1648, and it is believed that William named it. WilliamBeardsley was one of the founders of the First Congregational Churchesat Stratford, and was a leading spirit in all public affairs of theearly times, as records show. He was Deputy of the General Court atHartford, for eight sessions between 1645 and 1661. In the colonialdocuments he is spoken of as "Goodman Beardsley." He was a deputy tothe General Court for 7 years and was a mason by trade.
[770] Another source gives 1605 (Cutter book on CT genealogy). This sourcealso says that family tradition places his birthplace inStratford-on-Avon, but this has been discounted.
