Melview Footballers Win Final

Melview Footballers were unlucky to lose the "A" Championship Semi-Final to Killoe, but as this was their first game of the championship, Melview went into the "B" Championship.  Melview were drawn against Edgeworthstown in the "B" Championship Semi-Final.  Melview defeated Edgeworthstown and booked their place in the final against old rivals St. Emers.  The "B" Championship Final is due to be played in Dromard at 5pm on Monday, June 16th.

After a late change of venue, Melview had to travel to Ballymahon to play their final against St. Emer's.  This was did not prove to be a barrier for Melview and they went on the beat St. Emer's comprehensively and thereby take home the trophy.  Well done to Robert Kennedy on getting player of the match.  more details to follow.

The bowling team was made up of students from fifth and sixth class, some of whom also play on the football team.

Melview Defeated in Championship Semi-Final

The Melview Senior Football Team were defeated in the Semi-Final of the County Longford Cumann na mBunscol Championship.  The game was originally due to be played in Slashers on Tuesday 6th of May, but the failure of the referee to appear meant the game could not go ahead.  The game was rescheduled for the following week and a late change saw the game moved to Edgeworthstown.  Due to problems with the referee again, the game which was scheduled to throw in at 6:30, did not start until 7:10.

Melview lost the toss and played against the wind in the first half.  A strong wind in the first half made it difficult to score and much of the play took part in the Melview half of the pitch.  Killloe built up a lead in the first half and built on that lead in the second half and so Melview were trying to catch up for all the game.  Unfortunately Killoe had pulled too far ahead and Melview were unable to catch them, leaving Killoe with a win.  Paul Devine put in a strong performance for Melview with some fine scores from play.  Robert Kennedy in midfield for Melview, played well and put in maximum effort for the entire game.  Mark Valentine also put in a strong performance.  Fine performances from Simon Kiernan, Michael Farrell and Neal Farrell helped keep Melview in the game.

Melview Team: Harry Hughes, Michael Farrell, Sean Monaghan, Matthew Dowler, Daniel Phillips, Simon Kiernan, Padraig O'Reilly, Robert Kennedy, Thomas Kelly, Mark Valentine, Paul Devine, Neal Farrell, Rory Higham, Sean Flynn, David Mimnagh.  Subs Used: Gary Reilly for Rory Higham.  Subs: Morgan Kelly, Stephen Norton, Jack Considine, Emma Dardis, Franklin O'Reilly, Ethan Fitzpatrick, Ciaran Devine, Daniel Mimnagh, Desmond Guihen.

McDonalds Catch and Kick Programme

The McDonalds Catch and Kick programme got underway in Melview on 2nd April.  Mary Burke and Ray Donlon arrived to ensure proceedings got off to a professional start.  All children in 5th and 6th class who were interested in taking part were given a place.  Players were divided into pairs.  The players were paired randomly, which led to some interesting pairings.  All children were eager to take part and the possibility of playing in Croke Park on All-Ireland Final Day generated excitement and enthusiasm  amongst the players.

The McDonalds Catch and Kick Programme involves a number of skills challenges which will be practised in the coming weeks.  As the name suggests the skills involved are catching and kicking.

Mini - Sevens

Mini-Sevens Hurling

Melview Boys took part in the Hurling Mini-Sevens on Wednesday, April 30th in Slashers.  The Hurling tournament proved to be more to Melview's liking than the football, with Melview going on to win the competition.  Melview held Abbeylara scoreless in their first game and repeated the process in the game against of Glen.  Melview clearly liked to leave their opponents scoreless and a final placing against Newtowncashel lead to another win and a clean sheet for Melview's goalkeeper, Thomas Kelly.  Fine scores from Sean Flynn and Robert Kennedy helped Melview through the competition and to secure a first place.  Melview backs, Michael Farrell and Sean Monaghan provided good support in the back line and strong support was also provided by Simon Kiernan and Padraig O'Reilly further up the field.  Melview were also able to rely on two strong subs, Mark Valentine and Daniel Phillips, who both played and scored at various stages of the competition.

Melview Footballers Celebrate

The 7th of November proved an historic day for Melview as the U-13 footballers took home the Andy Davis cup for the first time since 1997.  The competition between the four town schools has been on the go for a number of years, yet the cup has failed to make its way to Melview in recent years.  Melview footballers have been in training for a number of months and the effort put in during training has paid off.  Melview footballers remain undefeated this year and the first trophy of the year is a welcome addition to the Melview trophy cabinet.  Melview played out a close encounter with fierce rivals St. Emer's to come out on top, with just two points to spare.

Division 1 Hurling Plaque

Melview Crowned Division 1 Hurling Champions

Melview were crowned the Division 1 Hurling Champions for the second year running after an exciting game of hurling against St. Emers.  Melview started well notching up a few good scores to take the lead.  The lead didn't last for too long and Emers got the upper hand with some good goals. At half time the score read Melview 2-1, Emers 4-0.  Melview had some work to do and put in a strong second half, with the teams finishing the game Melview 3-3,  to Emers 4-0.  The resulting injury time proved how close the match was, with the game being won with only a single score.  There were two halves of 7 minutes played in extra time with the only score a goal for Melview after three minutes of the first half.  Melview defended well and managed to hold off St. Emers and go on to claim the trophy for the second consecutive year.  Thomas Kelly and Robert Kennedy put in fine performances and in defence, Michael Farrell provided many good clearances.

Melview 'A' Lose Indoor Hurling Final

The final of the Supermacs Indoor Hurling Championship took place in Newtownforbes on Sunday 2nd March 2003. Melview A went into the final as the highest scores in the championship with an impressive 18 goals behind them.  Melview were also one of the few unbeaten teams in the competition.  At the semi-final stage Melview had drawn with old rivals St. Michael's (4-4) to secure places in the final for both teams.

The strength and determination of both teams was a good recipe  for a close encounter. Melview got off to a good start, with Paul Devine scoring the first goal , but this lead didn`t last for too long. St. Michael's struck back almost immediately with Martin Nevin scoring a lucky goal with a long range shot deflected off Melview`s goalkeeper, Neal Farrell. Melview`s side was strengthened when Robert Kennedy came on as a sub but St. Michael's were next to score leaving Melview trailing by a goal at half time.

Shortly into the second half St. Michael's scored again but Melview fought back bravely and a goal from Thomas Kelly brought them back into contention.   Melview almost levelled the game when a shot from Padraig O`Reilly came off the post.  However St. Michael's finished strongly with a fine goal from Sean Hughes who had come on as a sub. The final score was St. Michael's 4- Melview –2.

Melview 'B' Lose out at Semi-Final Stage

MELVIEW (B) LOSE OUT AS CASHEL AND KILLASONNA TOO STRONG

Our first match we played Legan and we beat them 3 – 2.  Mark Dowler scored all three goals with great assistance from Aaron Hussey.  Gary Reilly and Sean Monaghan were strong in defence and there was some brilliant goalkeeping from Sean Flynn

Our second match was against Killasonna and our manager, Master Mac Donnell kept the same team because of the brilliant performance in the previous match.  2 first half goals came from Aaron Hussey.  Killasonna pulled one back just before half –time.  Killasonna got two quick goals in the second half one resulting from a free.  Melview fought back bravely but unfortunately couldn’t break through Killasonna’s defence.  In the end Killasonna won 3 – 2.

The third match was against Newtowncashel.  Melview were really no match for the south Longford side.  A few minutes into the match, Melview found themselves a goal ahead with a great goal from Mark Dowler, but unfortunately this wasn’t an indication for what was to come, as four cracking goals flew past Sean Flynn in the first half.  The Melview defence was shocking as two more goals were fired past Sean Flynn.  Melview needed that win as it was crucial to get through.  However it wasn’t to be.  The final score was 6 – 1.

Melview Christmas Hurling Blitz

The 2nd Annual Christmas Hurling Blitz took place on Monday December 16th and proved highly successful.  The players were divided into 4 teams - Kilkenny, Clare, Longford and Galway.  Longford lost to a strong Galway in the 'B' final and in a repeat of the All Ireland Hurling final, Kilkenny took on Clare in the 'A' final.  However, in a very close game, Kilkenny and Clare finished level after full time, and indeed after extra time!  The outcome was decided using a method never seen before in Croke Park - a penalty shoot out, with Kilkenny coming out on top.

Everybody had an enjoyable afternoon and on hand to present the prizes was a man, more used to running around Croke Park on All Ireland Final day, referee John Bannon.  Also on hand to lend support and with some words of encouragement was County Board Chairman, Martin Skelly.  Accompanying Martin was Longford County Hurling Board Secretary Lisa Brady.  Many thanks also to Ray Donlon for helping in organising the event and to Mary Burke who did a super job of refereeing all the games.

Basketball
The pupils in fifth and sixth class have enjoyed a busy year of basketball training and their hard work and effort has been rewarded with a title for the boys in the Falcons Basketball Tournament.  The children in 5th and 6th class were trained by Mrs Casey and Ms Browne and the talented Charlene Foley also helped to coach the children and prepare them for their big tournament.  The Falcons Basketball Tournament was played over the weekend 21st - 24th May and Melview beat Stonepark and Colmcille before a very exciting and close final against Killoe.Click on the links below to see match reports written by the children.
