The Environment

We feel fortunate to have had several caretakers who have been most helpful in improving the school environs with planting of trees and flowers. We do our best to train the children to be environmentally aware, both in school and outside of it. To these ends, there is a great emphasis on tidiness, use of litter bins, care and respect for property and awareness of the beauty in our surroundings.

Our efforts in this area have been rewarded with success in various competitions, most recently the award for Best Project in the South Tipperary Environmental Awards Competition 2007.

There is a wide variety of trees in our wooded area. We have the native Irish trees, Birch, Oak and Ash and trees that were later introduced such as Horsechestnut and Sycamore. Our classes like to go for walks in this area to see what the trees look like at different times of the year. Points to look for in recognising trees are the shapes formed by the branches, the shapes of the leaves and the appearance of the seeds.

We are fortunate to be able to call on the expertise of local man Liam Burke when exploring our locality. He has directed our 3rd to 6th classes on most enjoyable trips to Grove Woods and most recently to Glencarra Woods. We all look forward to his next visit.
