GENERAL RULES
FOR COMPETITIONS
1. All competitors must be members of the Pioneer
Total Abstinence Association and must also
be members of the Centre which they are representing on the date of the first round of the
competition.
2.
All
competitors who are members of the P.T.A.A. must wear their
appropriate emblem.
3.
All
competitors must acquaint themselves with the rules of the competition in which they are participating.
4. A list of participants, including named
substitutes, on official paper, signed by
the Spiritual Director, President and Secretary of the Centre or Region, must be submitted to the Leisure
Committee on request.
5.
Where
the winner and/or qualifier of a particular stage of a competition is unable to participate in the next level
of the competition, the organising
committee may nominate the runner up of that stage to take the place of that winner and/or
qualifier.
6.
Proof
of age must be submitted to the organising committee where requested.
7.
If
competitors are not ready when their turn comes for competitions, they are eliminated, except in
exceptional circumstances to be
determined by the organising committee.
8.
Language and/or actions
which is/are suggestive, racist or otherwise
is/are not permitted in any competition.
9. Competitors must show suitable modesty in their
dress.
10. The officers of the Leisure Committee have the
final decision in all matters
relating to National Leisure competitions.
11. Professional performers, teachers of music,
dancing, singing or elocution, may not
participate in the field in which they specialise.
12. The
adjudicators' decision is final.
13. These rules shall apply at all levels of the
competitions.
14. Any competitor or competing group who is found
to be in breach of any rule will
automatically be disqualified.
15. Competitors and members of the audience shall be
prohibited from communicating with the
adjudicators before or during the competitions.
Any matter requiring clarification must be submitted in writing to the Organising Committee.
ALL-
Senior Quiz Rule
1.
Each competitor must be over
16 on 1st January in the year of the All-Ireland Final of the competition.
2.
The competition will be
organised as a Table Quiz.
3.
The number of participants on
each team shall be five (four plus one substitute). A maximum of four and a
minimum of two participants must sit at the table. If less than two members of
a team are present at the commencement of a competition, that team may not
participate in the competition.
4.
The structure of the Quiz
shall be as follows at all levels:
(a) Each Quiz will contain ten rounds with ten questions in each round.
(b) One point will be awarded for each correct answer. No half marks will be
awarded.
(c)
There will be ten questions
asked on the Pioneer Association.
(d)
Each question will be asked
twice. Then each team will have ten seconds to write its answer after which
time a bell will ring. The question master will then proceed to the next
question in the round.
(e)
The answer sheets will be collected
after each round.
(f)
Any query regarding a
question must be made by a member of the competing team prior to the
announcement of the result.
5.
All paper for use in the
Quiz will be provided by the Organising Committee. No books or paper other than
that provided by the Organising Committee will be allowed.
6.
No conferring by mobile
phones and/or no other communication will be allowed between teams and/or
audience.
7.
A master score sheet must be
provided for each Quiz and must be on public display. Two score keepers shall
be employed at all levels of the competition.
8.
In the event of a draw, the
teams will be asked five questions. If there is still a draw, a further five
questions will be asked, and in the event of a continuing tie, the teams
involved will be asked single questions until a winner emerges.
9.
The four teams with the
highest scores at each provincial final shall be eligible to compete in the
All-Ireland Final.
10.
The All-Ireland Final shall
be completed by April 30th.
11.
If a centre which won the All
Ireland final the previous year, wishes to participate, it must present a team
that does not include any member of the previous year`s team.
Young! Pioneer Quiz
1. Each competitor must be aged under 27 and at least
two competitors must be aged over 16 on 1st January in the year of the
All-Ireland Final of the competition. Teams for this competition may come from
either a centre or region.
2. Rules 2 to 10 inclusive of the Senior Quiz also
apply to the Young Pioneer Quiz competition with the exception of rules 4(a)
and 4(c) which will read as follows:
4(a): Each quiz will contain 6 rounds with ten questions in each round.
4(c): There will be six questions asked on the Pioneer Association.
Under 13 Quiz
1. Each competitor must be aged under 13 on 1st January
in the year of the All-Ireland Final of the competition.
2. Rules 2 to 10 inclusive of the Senior Quiz will
also apply to the Under-13 Quiz competition with the exception of rules 4(a)
and 4(c) which read as follows:
4(a) Each quiz will consist of 6 rounds with ten questions in each round
4 (c): There will be six questions asked on the Pioneer Association.
Under 16 Quiz
1. Each competitor must be under 16 on 1st January in
the year of the All-Ireland Final of the competition.
2. Rules 2 to 10 inclusive of the Senior Quiz will
also apply to the Under-16 Quiz competition with the exception of rules 4(a)
and 4(c) which will read as follows:
4(a): Each quiz will contain 6 rounds with ten questions asked in each
round.
4(c): There will be six questions asked on the Pioneer Association.
ALL-IRELAND SUPERBRAIN
COMPETITION RULES
1. This competition is open to Pioneers only.
2. Competitors must live or work in -the Province they represent. A competitor cannot represent more than one
Province.
3.
There shall be two minutes in which to answer questions on a selected subject and 2 minutes in which to
answer general knowledge questions. In his/her own
interest a competitor is advised to pass immediately if he/she cannot think of
an answer. If a competitor answers a question or answers 'Pass' prior to the
Question Master completely asking the
question, the Question Master shall proceed immediately to the next question. A bell shall sound at the end of 2 minutes, but if the Question Master has begun to ask
the question, he/she may continue
and the competitor may answer. 4: The
competitor with the highest aggregate of points at the end shall be deemed the winner. In the event of a draw, the
number of passes shall be considered
and the person with the least number of passes shall be deemed to be the winner. In the event of the competitors having the same amount of points and passes, each
will have a further minute, or
minutes, in which to answer questions on general knowledge.
5: The two
competitors with the highest scores at each Provincial Final shall be eligible to compete in the All-Ireland Final.
6:
All successful competitors must select a new topic in each subsequent round. No competitor may select the
same topic for more than one round
of the competition.
7: Competitors must select one of the following
subjects: Films, Literature, Famous People, Politics, The Pioneer Association, Animals, Geography,
History, Current Affairs, Sport, Religion, Music. The Question Master must prepare questions
which are short, clear and unambiguous.
8:
Any query regarding a question must be made by the competitor prior to the announcement of the result.
9: The Question Master will use
the same set of questions for each competitor
selecting the same subject and the same set of questions for each competitor in the general knowledge round.
10. The winner may not take part in the competition the
following year.
11: The All-Ireland Final shall
be completed by April 30th.
