Aquamarine
Aquamarine
is a variety of beryl, a mineral group that includes emerald, morganite
and heliodor. The main deposits are found in Pakistan, Afghanistan,
Brazil, India and Russia. It has a hexagonal crystal habit and is a
hard gemstone making it a good choice for jewellery that is worn frequently.
It is colored by trace amounts of iron that find their way into the
crystal structure.
The leading producer of aquamarines is Brazil, which has
many mines. Pakistan and many U.S. localities, produce wonderful specimens
as well.

For centuries this precious stone has been prized
by mariners. The name is
derived from the Latin words meaning sea and water,
Many traditions are associated with Aquamarine. It is said to bring
fair winds and weather and to protect from the perils of the sea, including
seasickness and is known as 'The Sailor's Stone'
The stone is also a symbol of beauty, honesty and loyalty and is often
chosen as wedding or anniversary jewellery for these qualities. It is
also reputed to impart courage and valour and strengthen the will.
