Peridot

Peridot is the name for the gem quality specimens of the group of minerals called Olivine, comprising of magnesium, iron and silicon. It is usually found in small aggregate chips and a large piece if Peridot of good quality is extremely rare. It has been used since ancient times, in many civilisations for the decoration of sacred objects. It is a volcanic gemstone that was once treasured by native Hawaiians as the tears of the Goddess-of-Fire, Pele.

Peridot has been mined as a gemstone for more than four thousand years and is mentioned in the Bible under the Hebrew name of pitdah. Legend said that peridot could not be easily seen during the day, but its pale iridescent green was easily illuminated by lamplight at night. It was for this characteristic that the Romans called peridot the "evening emerald." Peridot also often used to decorate medieval churches, and was probably carried back to Europe by the Crusaders.
