Lifestart Home Visitation Service

Family visitors, who are themselves parents, call to families on a monthly basis to provide information, support and guidance on early childhood development. The programme is based on the premise that families are the primary educators of children and all families contain within them resources and strengths that can be nurtured. The programme aims to help parents develop the skills, confidence and knowledge they need as parents.

Lifestart is a universal programme and is offered free of charge. Most referrals onto the programme come through the Health Services Executive Public Health Nursing Service.

Experienced parents from the community, who have been trained as family visitors, call to families of children aged 0-5 on a monthly basis. They deliver a locally adapted child development programme based on the American publication 'The Growing Child'. Their aim is to help parents to acquire the skills, confidence and knowledge to enable them to play an active role in their children's development. Lifestart family visitors also provide additional links to information and support as necessary. Lifestart is currently reaching up to 400 homes in the greater urban area of Sligo.
