The English curriculum is structured to offer children a total language experience in which oral language, reading and writing are fully integrated. English has a unique position and function in the curriculum because it is the first language of the majority of children in Ireland. The child meets ideas and concepts through listening and reading, and he expresses understanding and recounts experiences through speaking and writing. The better is the child’s ability with language, the more effectively will he learn. (Primary School Curriculum, English Language Guidelines, p. 2).
