Diary 2010

January     February    March    April     May   June    July    August    September     October     November     December

December
14th Evening all. I'm sitting here listening to Silent Night. So, so, peaceful.

No Banks, No IMF, No ECB, ahhhhhhhhh. Sheer bliss.

But, I hear you way: "What about tomorrow night?"

Let me give it to you straight!

Well, there are a number of people away.

The weather is changing back to cold.

Some are reluctant to travel as places further afield are tricky and likely to deteriorate as the temperature drops into the future.

The party might be more appreciated in the New Year after a nice break from all that rich food and drink and lazing about. I'll let you know date later.

I have had whispers in my ear that a night in would be welcomed or for anyone who can make it, a social trip down to the Bridge, for a social drink tomorrow night. Take your pick. If you decide to go to the Bridge, bring a friend for physical support and so you won't be lonely! I'm not sure myself yet - babysitting demands!!!

While you are deciding what to do, think back to when YOU were a child and what you thought of Santa Claus..........

Then, have a read of the reply to little 8 year old Virginia from The Sun newspaper Christmas 1897 which follows!!!

BUT, before you read it - are you being NAUGHTY or NICE ???

Here, we go.....................................................

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus By Francis P. Church
first published in The New York Sun in 1897. [See The People’s Almanac, pp. 1358–9.]

We take pleasure in answering thus prominently the communication below, expressing at the same time our great gratification that its faithful author is numbered among the friends of The Sun:

Dear Editor—

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?
Virginia O’Hanlon

Virginia,
your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

Well, did you like that?

Will you make glad the heart of somebody this Christmas?

HO - HO - HO...............................

1st
Well, how are ye all????  Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
I think winter is here???

Well, I think common sense prevails.

Unless you want to go to the Bridge alone for a pint or { } stoke up the sparking flickering log fire, lay down the bearskin and chill out!

Congratulations to Stewart, Lena and Peter [SLP], for being placed 1st, 2nd, 3rd in the TBPS Landscape Competition. I'll hold over the "runner ups" til next week so SLP can savour their recognition.

Thanks to Julie and family for judging and for the prizes - some will come in handy in the snow.........

What could we have been doing? Extracted programme from earlier newsletters:
01/12 Digital Imaging
08/12 Shape, form & texture (ABD)
15/12 Colour & Practical
15/12 Christmas Party @ The Bridge Hotel, all go.

Larissa bravely wanted to push ahead with her presentation tonight but she has been coerced into having a nice quiet night instead............

El Presidente offered to run a limited crossbar service but as conditions have deteriorated since he has withdrawn and is not risking it tonight  [sensible].

My Spartacus is lovely and wooly and warm and loves to snuggle up - he asked me to take his picture and say "hello"  I hope you can see him .

Weather forecast - more of the same.

I held off with the news hoping weather would improve but better to keep our membership strong - go on pamper yourself !!!

All for now,
Happy snow balling,
Jorge

1. What's on? plus the Christmas Story.
I'm delighted to report that the readership of the newsletter has increased. This is not without its consequences - see 2 below.
I'm reproducing the current calendar again for your convenience!
- I think it must be because I'm filling up with the Christmas Spirit and babysitting since 07:00 this morning .

I also took the opportunity of using my daughter's PC for the newsletter. We can expect a surprise appearance tomorrow night by our own laptop and projector - so bring your photographic efforts along for showing.

HERE THEY ARE AGAIN!!!

CALENDAR DATES: CUT OUT & KEEP BY YOUR PILLOW!
17/11 Light & Artificial Light
24/11 TBPS Landscape Competition - Yep, this is
the BIG-ONE...........(See Rules already sent out)
01/12 Digital Imaging
08/12 Shape, form & texture (ABD)
15/12 Colour & Practical
15/12 Christmas Party @ The Bridge Hotel, all going well.
We have a request in for any Christmasy photographs of Arklow, especially with snow - for a calendar. Please go through your archives and put 10 of your best on a USB stick for Wednesday night. More information then.
OK, back to the Christmas Story. Do you remember getting present(s) for Christmas? Well, in today's climate we'll be lucky to get one. Still, Christmas is all about giving (if you can).
Do you remember the little 8 year old girl Virginia who wrote in to the New York Sun newspaper in 1887 with a question - "Is there a Santa Claus?"

Now there was one for the editor! Still, not to be phased, he replied and you can hear his reply read out on radio between now and Christmas. This is a little something of what he said:

"Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light which childhood fills the world would be extinguished."

Now, let me tell you that I had an enquiry from Rudolph about an up and coming photographer. Equipped with a compact this photographer has done fantastically well in capturing some wonderful photographs. I have seen some of their work and I can tell you I'm impressed.
This person would like to move up a notch and make friends with an SLR. Unfortunately, they don't have enough dosh at present to get one (even entry model).

What I am hoping, is that somebody out there, has an SLR that is not being used and would like it to be given a wonderful  home with lots of TLC from this aspiring photographer. I can tell you that its for a good cause and would be fully used. A contribution could be made to the generous giver.Let me know if you can oblige and I will happily tell Rudolph to pass on the message that, like with Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

2.  What's been happening?
Thanks to Colum and Paul for their informative talk on some aspects of photography hardware also their handouts.

So I said above that the readership of the newsletter has increased. This is not without its consequences and has proved to be controversial. That's great because it does indeed show the newsletter is being read.

It would be great if anybody wants, to add to, or take issue with, any of the information in the newsletter, to just put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard and send me a note for inclusion in the next newsletter. Sure doesn't it boil down to the fact that we are all learning no matter how long in the tooth we might be!

9th 1. What's on?

Now, there's a question I get asked every Wednesday ......usually about the following week !

What I'm beginning to think is that while we may be great photographers , we aren't necessarily great readers or rememberers !

So, I have reprinted below the relevant CALENDAR dates of what already appeared in the earlier newsletter . Theoretically, this should mean none of those lazy questions!!!

CALENDAR DATES: CUT OUT & KEEP BY YOUR PILLOW!

10/11 Cameras, Lenses, Hardware - The Dean and The Birdman of Arklow

17/11 Light & Artificial Light

24/11 TBPS Landscape Competition - Yep, this is the BIG-ONE...........(See Rules already sent out)

01/12 Digital Imaging

08/12 Shape, form & texture (ABD)

15/12 Colour & Practical

15/12 Christmas Party @ The Bridge Hotel, all going well.

* Society's 50 mm Camera - get in some practice before you are selected to take part in the next 50 mm challenge. I think Stewart currently has it.

Its a while since a member went forward for a licentiate, associateship or fellowship. I know its demanding but expect extra encouragement over the coming weeks and months to put forward a panel of photographs.

Further to my message about the "Shield", there is aNovember Distinctions date change! The IPF have advised that the date for the November sitting has changed from the 27th November to the 28th of November..

Its about time the Society put forward a panel as well. Discuss.

The Chairman will explain in more detail the ins and outs of the IPF and their Distinctions for new members and anyone interested in going forward.

PS We pay a subscription to the Federation so we may need to make sure we get more bang for our buck!

2. What's been happening?

Peter Evers, photographer, opened up new avenues as he illustrated his interest in landscape with reference to his book and some mounted monster photographs..

Last week (if you read the newsletter) I quoted Peter as saying

"for the natural world to be perceived as landscape it must be framed first in the imagination, where it is shaped by individual memory and desire."

Having seen some of his work I have to say he did manage to turn landscape inside out and upside down. He certainly believes in developing his own style and that is what I think we are all about as well.

Why imitate when we are all originals and born with creativity, weird and wonderful?

Get out there with your camera and BE YOURSELF. Photograph what gives you life and energy. Bring a friend for company.

Thanks to those who reduced their images of the dancers to manageable proportions. Stewart and I will put together a worthy portfolio of class photographs for the school.

3. Outstanding business

Subscriptions - Talk with Julie and see whether you are uptodate.

3rd 1. What's on?

Wednesday 3rd:

* 20:00 - Meet

* 20:30 - LANDSCAPE

Peter Evers, photographer, is presenting a talk on landscape.

He's travelling some distance to be with us (Co. Kildare, I think) so can you make a special effort to be on time - seated by say 8.15 p.m. so the talk can move smoothly and allow Peter to get home this side of midnight!

One of his quotes is "for the natural world to be perceived as landscape it must be framed first in the imagination, where it is shaped by individual memory and desire."

With the landscape competition coming up and if you haven't captured your selection yet, you should pick up some useful tips {weather permitting if you're only going out now!)

* Christmas Party - Wednesday 15th December, all going well.

* Society's 50 mm Camera - get in some practice before the next 50 mm challenge. I think Stewart currently has it.

2. What's been happening?

* Great to see our new members being enthusiastic, developing their expertise and researching their first SLR. We look forward to your photographs and ideas.

* Last Wednesday we travelled into the wilder part of Wicklow. Greenane to be exact. Literally in the middle of nowhere there was this amazing dance school - it was huge. Some fantastic photographs were taken.

Each member will bring along a maximum of 10 photographs from the night's dancing for viewing. We appreciated the warm reception and co-operation from Isobelle and dancers. I could say my camera struggled with lighting on the night from wall mirrors, reflections, flourescent lights but in fact it was myself! I have a lot to learn still about lighting..........

Thanks to the drivers and their GPS knowledge.......................

3. Outstanding business

* Subscriptions - Talk with Julie and see whether you are uptodate.

October
26th Greenan - Dancers, - This event (published in last newsletter) is still on as of now - confirmed by phone this evening. Meet Bridge Hotel for 7.30 p.m. Departure. Best route suggested is via Rathdrum - see map details below. It may be rainy and/or gusty tomorrow night, so best to stay to main route. Turn right after Byrne's Pub in Greenan and location is first BIG entrance on right

Enjoy.

Georg

[Don't forget Halloween, we can have fun on the Wednesday after - BE BRAVE -dress up/make up - with me!]

20th There was one winner of this week's spot the mistake - did you notice? Ever vigilant, our SC, was first - the dancers, of course, are on Wed 27th and not 30th as originally typo'd!

The Society's 50 mm Film Camera.is being dusted down and will be brought into use shortly for "seasoned" members to "think" about settings, composition as compared to the almost instant use of digital cameras. A rota is being drawn up and shooting will begin shortly - could be based on seniority so don't be scared. A photographic exhibition was launched on Monday 18th Oct on the premises of John Floods old shop on the Main Street (beside J kay's) at 7.30pm. There is a marvellous visual treat for the eyes of photos taken in and around the streets of Arklow by members of the Arklow Mens Group from the CDP (Community Development Program Lower Main St) and the Springboard Family/child support agency, Ferrybank, Arklow. The printing was done by Blueprint, Lower Main St at a nominal cost. If you want to see what the lads have been up to, drop in any day Mon to Sat 12 madday to 3pm over the next two weeks.

2. What's been happening

This is a short newsletter.

Why?

As always we are trying to improve the service to our members-

The laptop is back from a Calibration & PC Health Check - courtesty of Jenny and Shane.

The PC is in tip top condition (probably all the TLC).

The projector is next to go for calibration and then - WOW!!!

You will be blown away by the colour management of the PC and projector (except possibly for anyone colour blind which we will soon find out.)

Did you hear that Jenny scooped a prize at the recent Aughrim Photo Competition! Well done, Jenny. Ask her did she make any adjustments in her GIMP.

The second reason is I have another b****y infection. I am quarantining myself so as not to give it to you.

The Dean of the PhotosSchool gave a captivating introduction to the art of photography on night 1. There were photographs and handouts to illustrate the points made.

Finally, if anybody wants to include any photographic equipment they want to put up for sale/barter/swop in the run up to Christmas let me know and I'll give you some space!

Equally if you're PC/Laptop is unwell, talk to Jenny/Shane for state of the art diagnosis and cure.

Normal (?) services will resume shortly.

So, relax, shoot, eat and drink well, and laugh for a healthy life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jorg, atishoooo

13th Short newsletter as I was waiting on info and am off now. See you later. G

Wednesday 13th:

20:00 - Committee Members: Committee Meeting .

21:00 - PhotoSchool starts - Guess where? With the basics! Everybody can benefit, new members, recent members, seasoned members! The Master of the Darkroom will preside. Society's 50 mm Film Camera.is being dusted down and brought out for members to "think" about settings, composition as compared to the almost instant use of digital cameras. A rota is being drawn up and shooting will begin shortly - could be based on seniority so don't be scared... [Caution: Talks/Events may be subject to change, due to unforeseen circumstances and will be rescheduled where possible or with another worthwhile night.].

2. What's been happening?

Well done to the new members who have stayed the course and are eager for PhotoSchool to start.

Expect unique perspectives as our new members upset traditional approaches!

Be creative and realise your own potential.

Anything and everything is possible so commit yourself to this new PhotoSchool Year.

An interesting example of creativity is Colum's Space Odyssey (no, not oddity) which was officially opened on Saturday 9th October in Birr Castle by the Earl of Ross. Colum and his work is now part of the history of the castle. The exhibition is on until January. Members trekked there and were given suitable refreshments. Local newspapers present.

Ask Questions! Don't accept everything on face value. We need to be constantly challenged

Rumpole gave an introduction to photography law. Commonsense was a useful guide to what could and couldn't be photographed.

4th I hope ye are all keeping fit and healthy for the new PhotoSchool Term which will be launched next week on Wednesday 13th (oops).

Unfortunately, this Wednesday's shoot has had be cancelled at short notice by the group who was to perform. BUT, the good news is that they can perform on Wednesday 27th and they are looking forward to that. I suppose this could be called delayed gratification such has been the interest shown. You know you have to be fit to be in the photography world, whether as a hobbyist or a professional. Having passed my medical with the Chairman and President and having just been given back the laptop you can expect a touch of normality now that "Lazarus" has had a reprieve. However, this introductory newsletter is short by order and a test!

So, for Wednesday, and before the PhotoSchool proper begins next week, we decided it might be useful to dip our lenses into aspects of Photography Law. This could help us keep our skills on the right side of the law. Well, when you consider you could go to jail for not paying a €200 fine because you had no car tax (sound familiar?), God knows what could happen if you rammed your lens into the gates of the Dáil. Rumpole has indicated that, flights, weather and warnings, being favourable, he could be in Arklow for a nine o'clock start i.e. 21:00 on aspects of Photography Law but he will finish no later than ten o'clock i.e. 22:00. Do remember to bring along some of your recent work preferably on a virus free USB stick so we can all share your enthusiasm. I have to say I was very impressed with the photographs by Niamh of her exotic travels tro India.... [She was probably sitting on her mam's hip as a baby and learning the craft first hand!] With scarce resources I thought she captured lots of shots with emotion and feeling. I'd love to watch them again [Now I'm wondering - how did she manage for batteries? Or maybe Colum gave her loadz of film before she went?] Thanks Niamh, and even though you are not (yet) a member, you showed us what is possible with a touch of creativity and imagination. Also, you showed that you were able to shoot even in difficult situations. Well done. I hope there are lotsa USB sticks on Wednesday night. OK, that's it. I'm keeping it short to give you extra time to study!!!

PS - I may not have all the email addresses of recent members, so if anybody has them, e.g. Audrey is great at that, if you send them on I'll forward the newsletter. Thanks. Jorge

September
21st Tomorrow Wednesday 22nd September - Julie on how to take fantastic landscapes (this will be of benefit to anybody entering the Tommy Byrne - TBPS Landscape Competition shortly.

This will be followed by a slide show and if you have any interesting slides, do bring them along and we'll throw them up on the screen.

Just to let you know Colum's Space Odyssey (no, not oddity) is on Saturday 9th October, this year, at 14:00 in Birr Castle. More anon but if you are up to trekking, go for it cos there will be famous celebrities and a professor there, I think.

8th 20:00 - Committee Members: Committee Meeting to finalise programme of events for this term.
· All: Please email me any topic(s) (before six oclock on Wednesday) you would like to have considered by the Committee and covered during this new year.

20:30 - Paul shows how to get the best out of black and white printing. · Bring along a black and white you'd like to see printed. We'll try and get thro as many as we can. · Society's 50 mm Camera. Rota to be drawn up and shooting to begin ASAP.

[Caution: Talks/Events may be subject to change, due to unforeseen circumstances and will be rescheduled where possible or with another worthwhile night.]

What's been happening?
· A warm welcome to our new members, Joe, Karen and Janita. We look forward to your photographs and ideas. ·  Last Wednesday Paul showed an introduction to black and white printing.
· There were no applications for any committee post so this vote of confidence in the current committee is a great boost.
· As we begin a new term, every effort will be made to keep talks/events on track.
· A presenter will say whether they want to take questions during or after their presentation.
· During a presentation stay focused and don't get side tracked into side chats which are distracting for the presenter and the meeting.

3. Outstanding business · Subscriptions - Talk with Julie and see whether you are uptodate.

5. TIP Don't go crazy buying the most expensive equipment/gear just yet... . Cartier-Bresson used a film camera, with the same lens, no flash, and same shutter speed - he didn't need the newest digital equipment to take great photos.

We have our own 50mm camera to focus the mind and Colum is giving it its annual overhaul before use.  Current film will be provided.

Remember: Camera to be brought back to meeting one week after issue with film intact so everybody can shoot in good time.

August
29th Those members who came down to the sailing club were well received and fed. The icing on the cake though was when two members present received beautiful Newgrange Glassware for their efforts, independently judged, -

Brian for his artistic reflective sunglass technique of a sailboat (well done), and George for climbing the mast to fly his Jolly Roger and photograph down the mast on the crew looking up (scary).

To show how appreciative the Arklow Sailing Club were, and showed no favouritism in our adversity, they awarded a prize to Colum (who was a diehard on the Bridge!) for his tilting of the sails.....(isn't he delighted he decided to go to sea that Saturday!).

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, Mark dropped the guillotine on the black and white photos for the competition and despatched them for adjudication. This will happen on Wednesday night - business commitments by the judiciary all going well.

At the point of bending over backwards, we hope to finish off the final chapter on metering.

So, this is it - the meat - read carefully. I cannot make it any clearer.

Wednesday night - 1st September 2009 Bridge Hotel

20:00 The Gathering begins...........
20.30 - SHARP - Introduction to printing black and white (Paul) - This will be followed next week with practicals on how its done - bring a photo you'd like to print differently and we'll see how many we get thro.
21:00 - Judging report on black and white competition - provisional based on business commitments. Finally, time permitting - Finish metering talk.

Most of the important communication takes place at the meeting on Wednesday. So, to be sure of the latest, on what's going on, please, come along.

The next way of communicating is by email.

If I have your current and correct email address you will get a newsletter, provided - you're internet is working. you tell your mailbox the newsletter is not spam having received it, now you have to read it and print it off if your memory isn't the best like mine. Of course, I don't know whether you're internet is working or not and I presume I have your current email address unless you tell me otherwise. sometimes, my own connection isn't working 100% or I have other commitments which don't enable me to send a newsletter earlier than this. Comprende?

Finally, the Society functions on a voluntary basis. We all give up our time to try and make it work. The members on your committee (who are due a committee meeting next Wednesday 9th at 19:00), make an extra effort to make things happen.

If you think you can do any of the committee jobs any better, come forward, and you can have a job!  My mailbox is open between now and next meeting to receive any applications! (Canvassing will disqualify)!

May you all be sane and happy in mind, body and spirit...............
~Au revoir
Jorg

24th Hi y'all.
I'm sooo excired.
Why?
I can't wait to get back to "normal"!
You know the way it is with September...........children back at school, new terms, new beginnings, various classes started up for learning.
And of course, can't wait to start sending out the full newsletter again - remember?
Quote, News, Agony Column, Tips, Weather.

Arklow Sailing Club are over the moon with our photographs and are opening their Club to us on Wednesday i.e. tomorrow night. The bar will be open so there will be no deprivation nor dehydration. The plan is to get together, see the photos in action AND guess what............they are going to pick, I think, two winning photographs and probably a surprise prize. I like surprises............do you?

PLUS, each member who took photographs, whether on a boat or on land, is being asked to bring a small selection of photographs from where they were [20-40 max].

At such short notice, this joint venture was a tremendous success (wasn't it?) for both groups and showed how each group is capable of working so well with another. You never know, we could have an annual event, so get your sea legs.

The next important item as you saw from the newsletter and our meetings is the Black and White Competition.

Bring your two entries, mounted, to the Arklow Sailing Club where we are meeting at 8.30 p.m. You already have the rules from our competition Secretary Mark who is totally committed with his extra member. Just follow them.

18th Hardy-Har................

The Arklow Sailing Club have sent a very special thanks to the members of the Tommy Byrne Photographic Society who took photographs of their recent races.

The undertaking was very adventurous for the members who were made to feel most welcome and at ease as they set sail for the turbines.

However we are reminded how fragile life is when three anglers were killed when their 25ft motor cruiser, the Castaway, sank off west Cork on Monday.  Officials from the Marine Casualty Investigation Board and the Garda are to carry out an inquiry into the incident and whether an explosion in the engine caused the fire.  A fourth man from America, the only survivor, was described as walking wounded after being winched to safety from the water. Luckily, the helicopter service was in the area at the time. The tragedy occurred about half a mile from shore in Bantry Bay, near Adrigole harbour, at around 5.30pm, 12 miles from Glengarriff. This must be a very difficult time for their families when what started as a  straightforward voyage ended so suddenly and tragically.

While safety was paramount for ourselves and crew, the skippers made sure we got back safely with dare I say literally thousands of photographs!

The sailing club hope to have a social evening Wednesday week in their "clubhouse" with us and show us their appreciation for our work - they may even show this with some tokens of thanks!

Last Wednesday saw Stewart and Julie give us some valuable insights, tips and photographs  for Wedding Photography. Stewart is finalising the handout/attachment for distribution.   There were some gorgeous examples of Photo Books. If you give/send me attractive Photo Book websites/addresses I will list them near the end. Michael was a living witness of health as he returned  after a nasty flu.

Thanks to Bernie who once again gave members the opportunity to "capture" some dramatic shots at the motocross.

There was a few moments of watery silence near the end when members understood that the Secretary had been "sacked". What Stewart was trying to say was that the Secretary had not been sacked but discreetly slipped out suffering from very painful MJI.

As you remember from last newsletter you can expect:
  1. 18th August - Metering & Lenses. This complex but simply area will be ably unravelled by our own  Master of Mystery and Wizard, aka, Dumbledore. Have any questions ready. Members are particularly interested in the practical application of the various metering techniques so if you want to ask about yours, please do.
  2. If you have any unusual lenses bring them along so we can compare what they  can be used for. We might even try a few grab shots!
  3. 25th August - Black & White Competition by the Competition Secretary's Rules which you have already received.
  4. 01 September - Black & White Print Night - include improving photos from 25th Aug
  5. 24th September - Patrick Nolan (Fair City fame) has invited us to stage a Photographic Exhibition in Conary during a cultural get together.
Colum occupies Birr Castle 8, 9, 10th October for his piece de resistance. There are a few pitches still left on the grounds for tents etc.
Wicklowtoday.com have again been in touch for more photographs. Julie has more info and I hope Larissa wasn't inundated by mistakenly attributing the contact to her.........
Remember to put your name on any photographs you display at the Business Centre. We will be changing the current ones before the end of the month.
We propose to do a catalogue of various print media in the not too distant future.
We are considering making an application for Garda Vetting since members are coming across and aware of situations where children could be the subjects of photographs. Please bring along photographic ID for yourselves so we can update our own ID cards. In these cash strapped times you'll find you usually get at least 10% discound with your card on photographic equipment.
A further talk on Photographic Law is in preparation and will probably be given in September.
Keep going............

Jorg,
6th Evening all.

I'm heading for the Guinness Book of Records and the production line is nearly burnt out, just like Paolo did with his shutter.. Thanks for your feedback to keep going. Sure ye's are great support.

This is a bare boner...............

We had a lively meeting on Wednesday and thanks to all who were able to come. Thanks also to Eoin for making it ashore in time to answer what we couldn't! The rest of you can catch up here.

News continued to flow in from various friends and well wishers for the arrival of Amira, a whopping 10lb + +. Mark got lotsa credit but I'm sure there was more to it than that! I doubt he did it on his own. (Watch this space)

We made a lot of progress and decisions on Wednesday:

Ok, that's it. Look forward to a big get together next week and lotsa lotsa photographs.

Send The Force to all those going sailing tomorrow and remember to keep them in your sails.

Heave-ho...................

2 There y'ar!
I didn't manage to be "AWOL" for long, now did I? I could feel the vibes as far away as An Daingean, an dtuigeann tú? I could feel de lurv!!! Thanks to all who enquired.

Apologies for disappointing ye all by not getting it out before I hastily headed off for a mini-break (note - "break" not "holiday"). I surrendered the laptop before I sped off and had no wi-fi to let you have it. Lucky I did cos the temperature in the hot tub was around 36 degrees. There were light pool refreshments and lotsa craic. Cost of living - e.g. pint of Guinness 3.80 Euro! Fungie sends his best.

Thanks Larissa for managing to get the SOS of events out to as many as you could. It was rumoured some never left the safety of their homes without the weather forecast!

As there is a holiday feel around with all the festivals and shows I'm not going to burden you with lotsa words. Instead, just to ask as many as possible to come down on Wednesday night as there are a couple of pressing matters we need to sort -

finalise arrangements for photographing yacht races this weekend coming with update on judging of photos taken
finalise Barn Dance
finalise date to begin the film adventure with the society's film camera and fixed 50mm lens (therapy will be available for any frustration, difficulty or indeed any RSI experienced from return to film from digital). I guess it might even be called one for the purists and as always this back to the future exercise stimulates a lot of debate and discussion. A slide show will be made of the best individual slides and fitting recognitions given.
finalise the Black & White competition due 25th August
bring along some funny holiday photos and some serious ones as well, (trying to get a clapometer installed as unbiased judge!!!)
Collect outstanding membership fees.
See earlier newsletters for any pending external competitions.

(It's on this side of Coolgreany, about 7 miles from Arklow and well sign posted) Polocrosse is a mix of polo and lacrosse so it should make for and interesting day, some even more interesting photos and it's something we haven't been to, as a society, before.

The RNLI have their Maritime Weekend also and here's the itinerary for those interested. There will be time to visit both events on the Sunday if desired.

Also, I have the majority of members email addresses but prob not all so tell a friend and between us all we may get the message to everyone. Thanks, Larissa.

21 July BOO!!!

Guess who?

Its the TBPS News room just cranking back into action after a spell on the mend in the twilight zone...

Did you miss the newsletter? Some people said they did!

Thanks to all those who knew and thought about me and more......

I managed to get out and about for a fair bit of the Seabreeze Festival.

But - Wow, I couldn't get over the number of compacts straining for "the" photograph. I took it easy and let the photographs come to me! I'll try and put together a slideshow for Wednesday. Do the same if you have any photographs over the festival weekend. While I didn't "capture" everything I did try to get some highlights and struggle at times with the light (comprende???).

So, as I ease myself back in, expect a little difference!! No, its not the usual format as you will see...................

Last week we were all judges! Yep, we all had the opportunity to judge a panel of photographs. Interestingly, most of us picked the one(s) we liked and disliked (i.e. a majority). Its not an easy job, but with commonsense and a bit of realism we got through. Overall we were pleased with the outcome and helped us focus on what we ourselves are about.

I know the last meeting or maybe two was a bit "fluid" but enjoyable and as we slip into the festival and holiday season expect some interesting photographs. We are due a "Photo Hunt", a siege of Aughrim (bring your camera in case the weather is favourable and we are able to head out there for some twilighty shots, trip to the windfarm, a look at photography - past, present and future.

Some members (actually one member) says they are woken up as my newsletter arrives. Sure, I never wanted the job anyway but I guess most of us have our mail turned off at night!!! I mean what would you be wanting it on for?

Back to the Big Event - I was delighted I could get out to the Festival. The sun was kind on Friday and Elliott took full advantage of the hunger and thirst to grab some 1/4 pounders in the burger eating competition. Well done.

The Gladiators came to Arklow and battled it out on the Main Street - a reminder of bygone days.

There was no shortage of music and The Elders lifted the crowd on Saturday. Not even the rain stopped the fans jigging and dancing to the lively music. The street buskers could hear, first hand, what Arklow is capable of producing. (I saw the proud "Mammy" and I'm glad I was there again as I'm afraid to think what she would have done to me if I hadn't (joke).

Pigs nearly flew on the Main Street and once word filters down the line, next year's herd may even have wings to escape to the duck pond where they can bob around with Dicey's Ducks who had the bookmakers having heart attacks.

Visitors could be forgiven for thinking 1798 wasn't over yet as the Wolf Tones brought the statue of Father Murphy to life. The Pipe Band showed their fitness as they marched fully kitted out in full battle dress.. They swopped pikes for pipes. I guess this Éirí Amach would have struck fear into the most seasoned British soldiers as they advanced tro the Main Street with their instruments booming and echoing.

The Garda Horse Mounted Unit was on standby for the baby show. Overall they had an easy time contributing to the policing of the festival. The horses made their own contribution and shall I say "gifts" to the festival. Just as well the Tidy Towns judging wasn't taking place then. The funds didn't rise to "horse nappies" but in these cash starved times the horses kindly supplied some very valuable fertiliser handily left on the street to give the hanging baskets an extra kick of colour.

The Children of Lir took part in the Swan Race and made a few bob.

Tommy organised musical chairs with a difference - blindfolded would you be minding!

The firework display was a welcome display on a drizzly night and managed to lift the spirits with cries of "oooooooh" and "aaaaaaaaah" . I saw a lot of cameras at work and we could well have new members on Wednesday wanting an outlet for their art.

The TBPS were thin on the ground the whole week - they were probably working under cover spotting any signs of trouble or to be fair calibrating their instruments for the Black and White Competition......... Did your heart skip a beat? Well it should. Wait til you see the Competition Secretary's criteria.

I went to the fun fair for a few photographs hoping to get more on the way back, but guess what! The Council workers were out in double quick time and in a matter of minutes had the Main Street sparkling again. Well done.

I saw huge grins on the faces of the innkeepers. I think they were particularly pleased as the demon drink flowed out onto the street from the floppy plastic glasses.

Incidentally, I spotted a reddish ride on people carrier with crutches on the back - the sleeves were being used as a welcome support for the heavy Guinness glasses. (One user was an Elder's fan from America!).

I really appreciate the wonderful voluntary effort put in to make these occasions so much fun and worthwhile. I know some members of the Committee were absolutely boll - knackered. Well done so we could capture some special moments.

I have to say I couldn't have captured some of the spirit of the festival without the help of my neighbours. They were particularly useful for steadying some of my shots. They brought me places I hadn't been before (woo-hoo). They remember less of the festival than I do!!! Funny tho, I think I walked them home!!!

Question: How do you think the TBPS should be involved with the Maritime Festival this year?

I saw our dear friend Stormy Stan recently and he was like a lathe! We'd need three of him to fill the suit!!!

Think about it and chip in your ideas on Wednesday night.

Bring along, preferably on USB stick any photographs of the festival, or your holidays, or what you like.

Margaret has been spotted out and about and looking fantastic.I think she might have been doing a bit of retail therapy while she was at it! Keep up the good work.

Some members caught a summer bug and were laid low but in the main we're nearly up to full complement again for Wednesday. That is of course if those members who went away for their holiers get back and have some photos on a stick for the rest of us to envy.

I saw a couple of programmes on telly where they looked back in time. I dug into our archives and I'm going to let you have a free read of what we were up to this time last year, roughly. Aren't we busy little bees really?

Who wants to have Dumbledore give an impresario and some of the other wizards?

June
29th Hi all.  I found it hard yesterday. I found it even harder today. So I said- to myself - "Just get on with it". The result - you have the newsletter a little earlier than usual - probably put it down to the weather so wet and muggy.  I could easily get sidetracked or distracted (you understand don't you?) but I'll keep going..............if I can.

EVENTS
Yep, we have a biggie on Wednesday. Are you sitting pretty or up to 90 looking for that elusive portrait?  Actually, you can put in up to three! Mounted.  If you've been coming regularly you'll be familiar with the current approach to the portrait competition - see below.

The Master of Macro (MoM) duly arrived on Wednesday with numerous artefacts to put under the microscope. At one point it was like CSI as a zipped tent was erected that looked a bit like something from Most Haunted. While most members pushed their lens tro an opening, one member tried a full immersion which the State Pathologist objected to. The candlelights made for a very relaxed evening tho all stayed awake. Some members needed chiropractor treatment after such was the angle of their shots . NEWS

MOM's handout is attached (hopefully!).

COMPETITIONS: Portraits - Wednesday 30th June As already reported Mark has taken on the role of Competition Secretary. His research has helped clarify what we want to achieve.

Portraits mean a lot more to most people, however. A portrait should capture more than just the likeness of a person. A portrait should also show their personality, or their character.

Portrait photography or portraiture is the capture by means of photography of the likeness of a person or a small group of people (a group portrait), in which the face and expression is predominant. The objective is to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the subject. ...

So, you have have a choice of category - baby, (aaaah), group/family, (hmmm), head!

Up to three photographs, In any or one category.

Good luck to everybody. May the Force be with you.............

HOMEWORK:
Keep practising what you are learning,,,,,,,This means bring along 1 macro photograph on Wednesday using the techniques that MoM (Master of Macro - aka Roberto) went tro on Wednesday.

22nd EVENTS
The Master of Macro (MoM) arrives for an informative evening on macro photography this evening. If you have any objects you'd like photographed, bring them down and the Master will make a selection from which to work with. Bring your camera so you can join in and any other equipment you need.

COMPETITIONS: People in Portrait – 30th June Black & White - 25th August

Stewart put forward a framework for the portrait competition on Wednesday but see below for more information.

Hopefully Margaret is still on the mend and continuing to recuperate helped along with the glorious weather.

NEWS
The light was fantastic as a small group went in search of the light on the South Harbour on Wednesday night. Expect to see some great photographs shortly. Some members even got down onto the river bed. Some stood their tripods perilously close to the waters edge. There was digital and there was film jostling for positions. Well worth the effort.l

Welcome once again, to all our recent members. Expect to see a new face shortly. His name is Brian. I met him on our community clean up day. He's going to bring along his 7D - :-o)). I think Brian is going to give it all he's got.

Competition Secretary
While the news was awash with tension about politics, the TBPS was delighted to "elect" a competition secretary. As usual, the post carries a massive salary, very handsome bonuses, extraordinary expenses but its not thankless. Many thanks to Mark for undertaking this challenging role amidst all his family and other commitments. After much lobbying, canvassing, the Treasurer agreed there would be an enormous golden handshake at the end of the term of office. We all wish Mark the very best as we try and put a bit more of a framework on how we go about our "competitions".

Fast out of the traps, Mark has given us some food for thought with the kinda "rules" that are already "out there".

15th I hope ye are all in good form with all the sun we're getting. Expect it to be sunny all this week and next. Wear protection.

EVENTS Get down to the South Harbour for 8.15 p.m. Wednesday night - its the place with all the fishing boats. Bring your camera gear. Hopefully we'll get some nice photographs and with good light. If you want to arrive earlier and wet your whistle in the Bridge, fine, but get down to the harbour.

HOMEWORK:
There are still some outstanding copy books - get it done and bring it in - candlelight

NEWS:
Paul's talk on Focus Stacking went down very well. He's the only guy I know can manage to photograph an Audi on his kitchen table! Did you get a chance to make your own designer car? What did you think of f5.6 v. f8?

9th Ah-ha, there you are!  How are you?  Well what do you think? As members, we're all different. Fantastic isn't it.  Can you imagine what the society would be like if we were all the same?  Remember that film - "Stepford Wives"?  Luckily we're not the same so maybe "Mutiny on the Bounty" would suit us better cos we're such a deomocratic gang. Its like we do our own thing but somehow manage to gel together as a society. Miracles still happen.

I've got some aching muscles. But guess what - I wasn't in the Ladies Marathon. Has anybody heard from the TBPS Roadsters? I heard they started and being paid up members you can bet they finished. They're due in on Wednesday night. I heard the Fire Brigade had to cool them down they were so hot.  Maybe we'll call them our Water Babies it was so wet.

EVENTS JUNE 9 Paulo as always pushes the boundaries and his show will blow your mind. Watch him handle the technics with flair. All I will say is that he is doing Focus Stacking for macro using helicon software. Committee Meeting 19:00 as usual.

COMPETITIONS:
People in Portrait – 30th June
Black & White - 25th August

I'm working with a world renowned expert to set out the kinda "Rules" or "Definition" that will apply here. Why? Because we're democratic and otherwise we'll all have our own ideas....

Yes, there were some teacher's pets, fair play to them, who got their "homework" in on time - otherwise we would be watching a blank screen . Thanks to all who were able to get down to it.

NEWS
Jorge got stuck into the talk on Photography Law on Wednesday. While the subject was broadly covered, there were some "forays" into muddier waters. It was a lively night but in the end it comes down to common sense. For some reason, probably the late ending and the effects of dehydration, there was a round of applause - or maybe cos the talk was over!. We all realised how easy it is for the "Law" to influence/restrain us as we go about being creative.

1st Congratulations to the TBPS Roadsters who are showing great discipline, commitment as well as becoming more nimble as they continue their Love Lane Adventures. Well done to all. Keep going.

Julie worked by candlelight on Wednesday and had us all crouching in low light as we were challenged to put her presentation into action. Her notes are attached. You'd better read them cos your homework is due in on Wednesday night as discussed. True to form Julie showed the same innovative form with her tutorial as she did by winning the best innovative award for her entrepreneurial vision and creativity - you probably saw herself and himself in the Wicklow People (Julie was holding the trophy - ha!).

Our Treasurer is putting the squeeze on for membership fee. As I've mentioned she's pretty toned up so I'd cough up or else...... She sends her appreciation where you are already paid up.

Birr Castle are still mad set set on Colum's Space Odyssey. Watch this space. Hope he doesn’t pull up the draw bnidge on me.

Thanks to Colum for sending in a very informative article on the psychology of camera clubs xxx This was indeed very informative and had some useful tips. I noted that it was about an English club?? Where they are fairly law abiding. I’m not sure if the same rigidity would be welcomed here. I met a man today who is going to join in September, tho he may come down some Wednesday for a taste. He particularly liked what he was hearing about our set up and how well we get on - inclusive rather than exclusive.

The planning and preparation for the anticipated "Field Day" are still in hand. Relevant permissions have been obtained. Forecast is promising. There are some details to be fine tuned - discuss Wednesday.

REMEMBER
Margaret as she keeps going with her recovery
Competitions as above
Homework as above
Worthy causes as above
Field trip to be covered at meeting.

You've still time to update your contact details by email [phone number, provider], if you haven't already done so

Confirm if you are willing to put your name forward for the expert panel for the Agony Room

Au revoir Jorg

May
25th Last week's outing fell foul of mother nature who closed down all shutters when she wafted her misty ways up and down the planned hotspots. Instead like schoolkids with a free class we merrily relaxed and chilled out with no exams/tests to take. However, this spilled over into Colum's slideshow and like the mist earlier, shrouded and curtailed the slideshow....

The feed back on the revamped newsletter has been very positive. You should now be able to get what you want fast!

There has been a good response from members to sign up to answer agony room issues. If you have any queries about photography send them marked "For the attention of Digifi". Answers will be provided as quickly as possible in the newsletter. However, questions can be answered in person by attending on Wednesday nights!

Thanks for suggestions on web links.

18th POLL RESULT
Thanks for taking the time to give feedback on the newsletter. There was overwhelming support for the TBPS Newsletter in the current format. There were some very useful comments which have been taken on board where possible. Most members enjoyed reading the newsletter leisurely over a cup of coffee (or stronger). Some wanted to get straight down to business so there is some re-arrangement of content. The weather forecast has been extremely useful to members, especially with the various symbols which make it easier to understand and will continue at the end.

EVENTS
MAY 19 – Two parts
Part 1. Leave the comfort zone of the Bridge for some field work. That is code to bring your camera [tripod] cos we’re going out to capture some goodies. Members on the Antrim foray may have a slight fitness advantage (?) here.

Part 2. Captain of the Starship Enterprise – Colum – plans to engage us as we put our feet up with his time capsule all about slides

MAY 26 – Our very own Keith Barry will have us all doing special effects through the medium of Julie – not to be missed – no tickets left, sorry.

JUNE 2 Photography Law and wacky stuff - Jorge

JUNE 9 Paulo as always pushes the boundaries and his show will blow your mind. All I will say is that he is doing Focus Stacking for macro using helicon software. Hold onto your pants.

Blow the dust off your trumpet – see below!

COMPETITIONS:
People in Portrait – end of June (exact date to be confirmed) Black & White - end of August (exact date to be confirmed)

NEWS
IPF Would you like to see your photographic images to appear in a yearbook? Well, the Irish Photographic Federation's Photography yearbooks have become very popular over the last number of years. They provide an opportunity for photographers to bring their work to a larger audience. Photography Ireland now contains both colour and monochrome images, excellently reproduced in a convenient A4 size book.

Don't miss your opportunity to be included in Photography Ireland 2010. The closing date for submission of images for consideration is 1st June 2009.

There is no charge for submitting images, and up to five colour and five monochrome images can be submitted. Images may be submitted on CD or DVD, accompanied by an entry form and a print of each image. See website link below for more details.

Maybe you might have to have your annual fee paid up???

Bealtine Festival The Bealtine Festival is underway to 31st May and the theme is celebrating creativity in older age.

I guess we’re aging from the minute we’re born.

I’m all for creativity at any age so watch the local papers for local events and use the evening photo shoot to be creative. So, what’s on E.g. Arklow Library has an exhibition of reminiscences, memories, photographs and letters of Arklow. Aras Lorcain has a photography exhibition under the umbrella of the County Wicklow Network (28 Lower Main Street). See website link below for more details.

Blow the Dust off your Trumpet is part of Bealtine and encourages older musicians to pick up their instruments again. Expect performances later in the year in Dublin and Cork.

11th FEEDBACK/MRBI POLL: Some members say its too long, some say its too short, some say its just right. The incoming Secretary would like to know what size you want it. A short email reply saying what you want, how often you want it and what you think would be appreciated by the Editorial Board. The content of any newsletter can be subjective so now is the time for your input! Preferably reply after you get it! Just put a tick against what you want and return to me, thanks :

Shorte ___

Longer ___

Just Right ___

More content - specify ______________________________

So, for now, the Newsletter will be kept short and you can see if you're missing anything.

The new Agony Column is postphoned pending feedback.

Annual Photographic Outing, this time to Antrim was a great success.

4th Didn’t the Bank Holiday fly by? Did you rest or capture photos? Speaking of holidays, expect some exciting events from your new committee as they knuckle down to finalising the various activities for the next few months.

I’m typing this on a midget. Why? Cos Stewart was fixing our laptop and reinstalling all the gear on it.

I just had a phone call from Stewart to tell me that the annual TBPS photographic field outing is on this weekend! The puffins didn’t give a great display in the Saltees last year so we’re moving up country! Being ecologically minded car sharing is on the agenda as well as the parameters for judging the photos we come back with from the expedition.

To recap expect to see our laptop in action tomorrow night.

You didn’t think I was really typing on a midget did you? Well, it is a midget laptop or properly called netbook.

YES, THE OUTING IS THIS WEEKEND. Funny, for some reason I thought it was next weekend.

Just shows you even the Secretary can get it wrong – or maybe I wasn’t meant to go to report on                                                                          ( (Information blocked for security purposes!!)

Anyway, you’ll hear final details Wednesday and if you’re not there I’ll get info out quickly.

You might get some photos to include in your panel for licentiate, associate, fellowship…………

Remember, you can help; make the society what you want it to be – contribute.

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING?
Well last Wednesday was more of a social night with the technology seizing up and a rescheduling of events. That’s no bad thing cos we’re more than our photographs and it tests the memory to remember names! Hockney didn’t make it due to volcanic dust. However, a surprise and rare visit from beyond in the form of the ghost of Henri Cartier Bresson was visited upon who who had some notable portrait subjects.

It was great to see Nigel back also Herr Villie. We look forward to seeing more of their photographic work. Roberto arrived back safely and has reels of photos..............

April
28th Your newly elected committee will be meeting as soon as they work out the ethics of receiving an honorarium while doing other things! Expect to see great events coming soon...........

Remember, do get behind your committee members and support them to make your society what you want it to be.

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING?
Gary O'Neill illuminated with his photographs, website and useful insights into the world of photography and photo-journalism. He touched on many sensitive topics, including consents, the law and his presentation went on til late. His attendance and giving up of his time was very much appreciated. We wish him well as he continues to blaze the way with so many stunning and winning photographs.

Come forward with your ideas for 2010/2011

who you'd like to get to talk here
any area you have a passion for and want to share with the rest of us
any particular aspect you'd like covered
If you're new to all this, you're not alone, help is there from your fellow enthusiasts. Go on - share it.
If you're too shy, bring your photos or USB stick with 'em on it

21st As you know the new committee was elected. Many didn't want the job but got it anyway! Maybe they're doing too good a job.

Ye all know I was having trouble with my mouse. Well Stewart graciously decided to give me a hand and fair dues he came up with a lateral solution. Hence this stab at a bit of news.

Margaret is coming on nicely after the op. Keep her in your thoughts/prayers or similar!

17th Fuller newsletter will follow soon hopefully - have to check with Reuters roving correspondent! -If you were there you know what's going on, if you weren't like me, you'll have to wait I guess for the full lowdown although the mega stuff is here.

That said, I heard through the lens that Colum did a fine job at short notice on Wednesday. Thanks Colum.

Twas the place to be - better than Whitney........

7th

Well, are ye all eggcited about tonight?  Isn't it a lovely evening to be showing off our nature photographs?

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING?
Well, we've been a bit scattered between one thing and another, usually colds, but hopefully with the elections upon us TONIGHT some new blood would be most welcome to stir us up. So, put on your best smile and throw yourself into the ring for the most rewarding and popular jobs around!!!

G's presentation was on Street Photography. This proved to be very stimulating and provocative. This is an area that has to be approached in a very professional and circumspect manner. The rewards can be very dramatic, interesting and thought provoking photographs.

When the second part of this presentation is on, it will cover some of the more serious aspects, like permissions, privacy and a peek at relevant law.

Some photos on USB sticks were shown including "Carry on with the TBPS" and some Patrick's Day memories.

With your enthusiasm, we'll fill out the immediate future with the help of the new Committee.

Thanks to the outgoing committee for their great guidance and hands during the year. Also all those who gave presentations, showed their photographs, and came along for the craic.

March
17th Get out there an' catch some Leprechauns!

10th Wow, what do you think of all the sunshine and moonshine? Isn’t it great to see?  The days are getting longer, so, of course, the nights are getting shorter! Little Einstein or whah?

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING?
Mark Sedwich, FIPF, EFIAP opened Colum’s fantastic exhibition "SPACE ODYSSEY 2010" in the Arklow Visual Arts Gallery. This replaced our usual Wednesday meeting. After a refreshing liquid start we had an opportunity to see Colum’s marking of the 50th anniversary of manned space flight. With an interesting selection of spacecraft and other flying machines exhibited, the gathering were also treated to a selection of Colum’s “other” photography. Family and friends celebrated Colum’s achievement and, as the night closed, made for the “Club House” i.e. the Bridge where the speculation about how Colum did it continued. The exhibition was newsworthy and press coverage captured the flavour of the night. Well done, Colum, and thanks from all of us for the invite!!!

3rd Hi all, seems like ages since I saw ye all. Anyway I hope this newsletter brings you some joy.  Have ye been looking at the marvellous full moon lately? Did you howl? Arooooooooo...

Well, tonight, guess what - you can get some moonshine. Read on..........

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING?  That's a good question considering I missed last week and by golly it was hard.  There was no hot news from the other busy secretary so here goes:
Paul gave of his usual best with his presentation on Black and White. I have to say I lurv black and white - it can say so much. Thanks Paul for your handouts which are attached. Also to Larissa who sent me hers but I forgot to attach them last week and are also attached.

Julie returned to the fold clutching her new "1000D". Ah, sure I guess she has to start somewhere and what better place than a very basic piece of equipment that she got her head around as soon as she opened the box. Just as well I wasn't there to get my hands on it after pushing the projector to its limits!

What’s on?
[Caution: Talks/Events may be subject to change, due to unforeseen circumstances and will be rescheduled where possible or with another worthwhile night. ]

I'm glad I had the foresight to put in that caution a while ago!

Why? Because following last week's announcement and the issue of invitations, I'm delighted to say that Colum gets pride of place tonight - centre stage, uncluttered and without distraction from the planned talk on portraits or the enjoyment of the project on creativity. So, what's he up to? Remember I mentioned moonshine, well tonight, Colum will try and blast off with each and every guest with his "SPACE ODYSSEY 2010". This is an exhibition revealing his nearly 50 year love affair with all things that fly, but especially aircraft and spacecraft. This is Colum's marking of the 50th anniversary of manned space flight.

Where is this happening? What better venue than our own Arklow Visual Arts Gallery. The exhibition will be performed by Mark Sedwich FIPF, EFIAP (Incidentally the IPF are looking for fees from anybody using their letters after their name).

23rd Last Wednesday, Paul Kavanagh treated us to some breath taking photographs in his slide show. We were led to dizzy heigths as he captured some wonderful mountain scenes in Nepal, Wales, Scotland and here at home. Wasn’t the one of his friend hanging on by the fingernails of one hand, literally, pretty scary? And with no ropes or tethers.

Tonight - Black and White Photography with Paolo and Colum will mention an invitation that came to us

16th Well, well, anybody blushing from Valentine’s Day?  Did you?  Did Valentine’s Day get your creativity in motion for the project due on 3rd March.

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING?
Remember the 10th - Distinctions Panel Preparation?
Well done Chris for providing so many panels! Unfortunately you can only present one – so which one will that be?  Jenny was observing nervously so we can expect her panel shortly.

It was a great night??? I gather ye were casting your eye over some successful panels.

We have some brilliant photographers with brilliant photographs who haven’t yet been given due recognition for their dedication, commitment and ability. If you are dogged by whether to put forward a panel – just do it, but only if you want to. No pressure, only encouragement.

Subscriptions  - dig deep if you are due and offer Julie whatever you can, for the moment. Yes, times are tough, but everybody says the TBPS is great value for money.  Indeed it is - not only does our photography give us life but there is also the slagging, the jokes and dare I say the very, very personal styles of photography, especially among the new members  who make us all think afresh.

Those of you who are coming on a regular basis will know we’ve also been “upgraded” by the Bridge Hotel. Thanks Jim and Patrick who have been very hospitable to us and generously sponsored the recent Maritime Competiton. We now have use of the downstairs lounge with a variety of multi-media facilities available for our presentations. This luxury caters very well for the growing membership  who can also wet their whistle with whatever they want..

Of course, if you didn't know, and found the "Upper Room" empty you probably didn't know we were downstairs.

9th Did you notice the snow feathering its way down, again......... Better have a good read of the weather forecast to be sure, to be sure. But then with all the hearts and roses of Valentine’s Day coming, the weather will be the last thing on your mind. Surely Valentine’s Day will get your creativity stirring for the project due on 3rd March.

A brief report on the Kilmacurra onslaught for those who couldn’t make it.

The able bodied rendezvoused in the car park and had a quick change into commando gear. The pace was quick and the hardened TBPS 1st Batallion quickly took the pond area.

Shooting was fierce with some hidden sniping from the cover of the trees and ground to contend with. In typical commander fashion Stewart quickly had a seasoned group take the waterfall and banks. His instructions were crisp, clear and quick. Very soon the stalwarts were getting the results they wanted.

Pushing on before dark, most of the group went down and took cover behind the snowdrops and began shooting up. There were accusations of trampling and destructive behaviour but the group held firm. Again, Stewart was quick to demonstrate how it was possible to shoot up without going down..

Numerous prized captures were made and saved for the forthcoming parade. This engagement shows how quickly all recruits can learn/advance mainly using a hands on approach coupled with small inputs of theory.

There was great eagerness to get going again, With improving light and better weather more excursions can be expected. Start getting your kit together now with some light provisions. Brush up on your F stops, exposure, shutter speed and ISO so you can be sure to get exactly what you want. Unfortunately Stewart’s command vehicle suffered a muddied attack by the Jackal and had to go in for servicing.

WHAT'S BEEN HAPPENING?
The Bridge Hotel Maritime Competition {2 prints, mounted – maritime theme} saw Jorge awarded 1st Prize and trophy for his interpretation. Peter came 2nd and Bernie 3rd. The photos are on display in the business centre.. The judges usually have a different view of the world to ourselves so there is always a bit of surprise between their likes and ours.

Thanks to Larissa for being patient with us in getting up and running with Flickr. Thanks to Chris for permission to open his creative photographic window to the world. Watch out for that stunning black and white zebra!!!

It wasn’t long before Larissa had us all drooling to make a slide show as she made it look so easy.

Did you make it down and back from Tony Kew's engaging exhibition?

January
Enjoying the dry crispy sunny day?

If you were there on Wednesday you will know that some members wished to meet up at the Bridge before heading for the forest walk at Kilmacurra on Sunday - forecast still accurate..

This is an arboretum particularly famous for its conifers and calcifuges, planted during the 19th century by Thomas Acton in conjunction with David Moore and his son, Sir Frederick Moore, curators of the National Botanic Gardens in Glasnevin.

It was a time of great botanical and geographical explorations with numerous species from around the world being brought back to Ireland through Glasnevin. The more favourable soil and climatic conditions at Kilmacurragh resulted in many of these specimens succeeding there while struggling or failing at Glasnevin. Restoration work is being carried out on the grounds. There is also limited access fot visitors with disabilities.

Located approximately 5km off the N11 route (south of Rathnew) or 9.5km from Rathdrum.

A bit of background for ye:
Its near Sharpshill Dog Sanctuary for anyone was there before.
Bring your camera gear unless you are on a keep fit walk.

20th - Thanks to Robert for letting us get our hands dirty in the black bag. At one stage Robert looked like he might disappear inside it..Well, do you think digital is cleaner?

The Crossword required a bit of mental gymnastics but I think all passed the mental fitness test.

Thanks to all who eagerly surrendered their stick of Winter Wonderland experiences. Isn't it amazing what our eyes see...........

Happy New Year to one and all!!

If you're reading this newsletter then you survived Christmas into the New Year. If you are reading it over a coffee, enjoy!

Back to basics then. Batt O'Keefe pushed responsibility for education times back to the local communities. The TBPS were ahead of the posse when an executive decision was taken to cancel last Wednesday's meeting due to the bad weather.

So now, its ho-ho-ho and off to college we go. This term resumes tonight – see below.

CALENDAR OF EVENTS:
There is a committee meeting tonight at 7.00 p.m. Before the main meeting .The meeting will build on the events already decided with more to come.

The agenda for January was included in last months newsletter but has changed slightly with the weather – see below.

The macro night is on tonight, so bring your gear – especially your camera if you want to get in on the action. This was cancelled due to the weather and also gives Robert plenty of time to find his way around the darkroom!

JANUARY 6th  Macro night, texture. Bring your new camera (if you got one), tripod.
10th Sunday, Big Day Out to Dublin. Details to be confirmed.
13th Committee Agenda Meeting before main meeting.

Robert leads us into the Dark Room. We haven't been there for a while and there's no need to be scared. Robert has some interesting techniques up his sleeve!

20th Winter Wonderland Project which should capture what was going on over Christmas should be brought in on USB stick preferably for display on the PHOTO WALL. 6 images.

21.00 - 22.00 Josh will show us how to bring out the best in our babies.

27th Bridge Inn Competition - watch out for more info.”
