He was buried in Elizabethtown, Ohio. His grave gives his death dateas 1874, but the grave is new-looking, possibly added many yearslater. A death notice in The Lawrenceburg Press, Feb 27, 1873 reads:"The funeral services of Uriah Stevens who died at Noble, Illinoislast week, and was brought here for burial, will take place atBelleview church on next Sabbath March 2nd at 10 o'clock. The friendsof the family are invited to attend." The Belleview church was theMethodist church that Charles W. Stevens (Uriah's brother) wasinvolved in, located in what used to be called Hardinsburg, just amile or so west of the Ohio / Indiana line. [The building was forrent in early Oct. 2000] .
Uriah Stevens moved to Noble, Illinois with his wife and familysometime after 1860, since he does not appear on the 1860 census inNoble. He died without a will. His eldest son Samuel S. Stevensadministered his estate. There were a number of claims against theestate for unpaid bills. There was an inventory of his householdgoods in 1873, including his animals and their names. A doctor billshows that Uriah had a tooth extraction only 11 days before he died.He was treated with antiseptics (balsam, camphor) but must have had aserious infection.
[271] Gravesite is located in a small grave yard on Stephens Road inElizabethtown, about 2 blocks north of the beautifully restored oldHayes family Methodist church. Across the street is one of the IndianMounds that are found throughout the area.
