Book Description
The first edition of Therapeutic Massage was published in
1995 and as the areas of massage therapy and other
bodywork modalities are rapidly changing, it was
important to revise the text to keep up with changes in
the field. This book teaches the reader how to skilfully
apply massage techniques, as well as providing
information on sanitation, hygiene, body mechanics,
business practices, ethics, and much more. Each chapter
builds on the one before it, beginning with the basics
and expanding therapeutic applications as well as an
introduction to bodywork systems.
-- For physical and manual/massage therapists, and other
health care professionals.
Features: * The new
edition is in full colour, rather than 2-colour. *
Overall text layout has improved to make it easier for
reader to follow. Figure layout has improved and size of
many figures has increased, especially in the technique
chapters. * Textbook is integrated with workbook
features, such as proficiency exercises where the reader
can answer right in the book, and workbook sections at
the end of each chapter (with answers). * The order of
chapters has been changed to provide a more effective
flow and ease in teaching/learning the material. * A
clinical reasoning model has been presented as a unifying
thread throughout the text. * More headings within
chapters have been added to make material easier to
follow. * Sections on ethics and professionalism have
been completely revised and expanded. * A section on the
power of touch has been added. * The medical terminology
chapter has been reworked to support effective intake,
treatment plan development and charting procedures. * A
section on the appropriateness of therapeutic change,
condition management, and palliative care has been added
to help in the development of treatment plans. * Three
new appendices include: Massage interactions with
medication, guide to skin pathology, and suggestions for
self massage

Reader Review
Excellent text for the beginner student & for
the professional, April 20, 2000
Reviewer: debbiehart@DWW.Net from Durango, Colorado
I am owner/director of Silver Sword Massage Academy
located in Durango CO. Mosby's Fundamentals of
Therapeutic Massage is an excellent text for the beginner
student & for the professional requiring a state of
the art resource. The latest edition is especially
enriched with fine color graphics for optimal visual
learning. I refer to these visual aids in my private
practice as well, to help educate my clients. The
technical information is presented in plain speak and
then, through skilled educational writing successfully
bridges into the technical language of the health field
of massage therapeutics. This book is the cornerstone of
our programs. I highly recommend Mosby's Fundamentals of
Therapeutic Massage as one of the best comprehensive
massage books on the market.

Book Description
This richly illustrated text teaches the basic techniques
of clinical massage therapy by embedding illustrations of
internal structures directly into photographs of live
models.
Each muscle or muscle group is shown, along with
surrounding structures, surface landmarks, and the
therapist's hands. Useful as a textbook of clinical
massage and anatomy, this text can also be used as a
practical patient communication tool. Basic clinical
techniques such as Swedish, Esalen, myotherapy,
neuromuscular therapy, deep tissue, compression,
stripping massage, myofascial stretching and cross-fiber
friction are included. Suggestions of draping options
correspond to illustrations of draping techniques. Its
muscle section surveys the body by region, shows muscle
in relation to referral fields, anatomical structure and
methods of working the area using a variety of techniques.
There is also a section on special considerations,
including pregnancy and children. Appendices include pain
referral zones by region, Greek and Latin prefixes and
suffixes, and a glossary of terms.

Exactly what I wanted!, November 7, 2002
Reviewer: A reader from Fort Lauderdale, FL USA
I know nothing of massage and I couldn't figure out heads
or tails from the many massage books I had purchased
until I received Basic Clinical Massage Therapy by Clay
and Pounds.
Will I read the book in it's entirety and use every
method, absolutely not, but now I can literally see the
muscles and the anatomy and understand what it is that
I'm working on in each and every part of the body and do
some good, it's a bargain at $45!
I'd say this is the bible of massage!
Not for the
novice, October 20, 2002
Reviewer: Linda from Bergen, NY United States
This is an awesome reference for the well trained,
experienced massage therapist. There are techniques
demonstrated in this book that are advanced. As for the
graphic presentation, there is no other book that I am
aware of that shows the human body from the outside in
quite as precisely as this one does. I purchased this
book, before it was actually published, as a student of
massage therapy and will use it in my future practice. It
has become a hit with the students and staff of my school.

Beard's Massage, June 20, 2000
Reviewer: Darcy from Maryland, USA
This book covers everything a massage therapist needs to
know, things I wasn't even taught in massage school. If
you want to know it all, get this book. It is wonderful
and I plan on using it as THE massage book for the
massage school I am opening this year.
