Mol An Oige My hat has been off for a long time in a respectful gesture to the great work being done by Mayo Cumann na mBunscol to promote our national games in schools throughout the County. For years lips service and little more was paid to promoting Gaelic Games amongst primary school pupils. I speak of the valley period between the passing away of the dominance of male national school teachers, who were then in the majority and who did so much to spread the game of football particularly, and relatively recent times. Clubs in some cases rose to fill the void, others, either through lack of appreciation of what was happening or because they did not have the resources or were even pure lazy failed dismally and whole swathes of talent were lost to the association. Cumann na mBunscol are highly organised in the county with on the ground administration and their programme of activity, culminating in the big final day, is a credit to all concerned. And a god send for the GAA which has had to contend with ever increasing competition from other sports. Treenlaur stars Treenlaur N.S. football team are currently on the crest of a wave after a famous win over favourites Partry in the 9-a-side national schools football league. Treenlaur also beat Cong and the Neale. In the game against Partry, Treenlaur led by 4-4 to 2-3 at halftime. Partry fought back bravely in the second half, but a brilliant goal for Treenlaur clinched the issue. They play Gortjordan this week. This star Treenlaur team is made up of Tomas O Cualan, Martin Mac Giobuin, Ruairi O Conaire, Briain O Neactain, Damien O h Eanachain, Padraig O Standuin, Micheal O Neill, Stiofan O Neill, Antoin O Neill, Daithi O Tuathail, Karl O Conaire, Sean O Seoigheo. Round 2-Currabaggan 2-3 Breaffy 4-4, Killala 2-5 Culleens 2-3, Rehins 2-1 Belmullet 2-7. The Rehins v Belmullet game was lively and entertaining. Rehins led by 1-1 to 0-3 at the interval.
