The Association for the Preservation of Memorials to the Dead (APMD) were a voluntary body who published 14 volumes, several in parts, from 1888 until 1931. Throughout Ireland contributors visited abbeys, convents, parish churches, graveyards and transcribed headstones on a selective basis - their own families and "important headstones" being typical instances. In the 20th century individuals recorded many graveyards and published their work in volumes, notably Egan & Flatam, 10 for Dublin (MDDU); Brian Cantwell, 10 for Wexford & Wicklow (MDWW) and 1 for South Dublin (MDDUC); R. S. J. Clarke 20 for Down (MDDO) and 4 volumes for Belfast (MDB) among individual works throughout Ireland. I suggest a visit to NATIONAL LIBRARY to browse their PC search facility for others. In the latter part of the last century the Irish Graves Registration Society (IGRS) revived the work of the APMD on a more thorough basis, sometimes revisiting the graveyards recorded by APMD, the value of whose work is that the lettering on many headstones transcribed by them had disappeared through weathering by the time IGRS and other transcribers revisited them many decades later. IGRS finalised their work by publishing two volumes in the 1990's which cover the twenty six counties. Recording now appears to have devolved to voluntary groups on a county by county basis. County libraries and Heritage Centres may well be focal points for this work, which is ongoing.
