The Somantano region is a land full of history, culture and contrasts. It is situated in a privileged enclave in the north east of Spain, surrounded by the Pyrenees, the Serra de Guara Natural Park and the Sierra de Salilnas. Each of the varietal wines are produced from grapes selected from a single limited production estate, thus giving them unique and exclusive characteristics.

MAS DELS PONTS - Tarragona, Capcanes
The winery at Capcanes is located high up in the hills roughly 30 miles inland from Tarragona. Primarily planted with traditional varieties Garnacha, Carinana and Tempranillo, there is also some Syrah, Cabernet and Merlot. The wines are all gorgeously thick , dark and spicy with intense fruit characters and lots of class.

This quality-obsessed family are one of the few Rioja wineries to use only estate-grown fruit. They produce wines that are voluptuous, opulent and richly fruitywith oodles of berry fruit that can be drunk young or aged slowed. FINCA LA SARDA- Navarra -Baron de Managa
As early as 1968 the Magana brothers felt that the use of Bordeaux grape varieties had great potential in Navarra. They chose the remote southern corner of that ancient province to plant vines they had carefully cultivated in their own nurseries and twenty years on they are producing world-class wines. The wines receive only an average of one year in barrel before being bottled where they will mature for up to five years before release.

Another up and coming estate from Rioja, that espouses low yiels and minimal interference as their recipe for success. The wine is big and rich with dense, chewy fruit and has proven very popular with a certain Mr Parker of late, so get in before the rush.

GRAN CLOS - Priorat -Limited
Joseph Maria Fuentes' philosophy is to get as much expression out of the terroir as possible using mostly native varieties and this tiny production wine (only 8,000 bottles) is made from vines with anaverage age of 60 years, planted high in the hills on slate soils. The wine is made from Grenache, Carinena and a little Cabernat Sauvignon and is aged for about twelve months in a mixture of new and one year old French and American oak.
