The history of Portlaw and the story of the Malcolmson family are inextricably linked.  The rise of the Malcolmson empire was mirrored in the growth and development of Portlaw, and unfortunately the decline in the fortunes of this great family marked a decline in the fortunes of Portlaw.  A history of Portlaw must include a study of the Malcolmson family

I am therefore extremely grateful to Ms. Tina Foran for granting permission to re-produce her comprehensive dissertation entitled

Nineteenth Century Industrial Village:

A case study of Portlaw, County Waterford

I have divided the case study into three sections to avoid long downloading time.
