Chapman, John - 1921 - 1926

John Chapman was appointed as both manager and secretary of United in 1921. It was a disappointing first season for him because the club was relegated from the First Division. They spent three years in the Second Division before being promoted. A season later, Chapman took Manchester United to the FA Cup semi-finals, but hopes of a first visit to Wembley were dashed by Ernest Mangnall's Manchester City.

Then came Chapman's downfall. Three months into the 1926/27 season, the Football Association suspended him "from all involvement in football matters". Manchester United had to dispense with his services, but the extent of his misdemeanours was never made public.
