Atkinson, Ron - 1981 - 1986

A Liverpudlian, Ron Atkinson began his managerial career with non-League Witney Town, then Kettering Town. His first League job was at Cambridge United, where he moved to in 1974. He stepped into the First Division with West Bromwich Albion and after three successful seasons there succeeded Dave Sexton at Old Trafford, in June 1981.

At United, he was thwarted by the success of clubs from his home town. Manchester United never finished lower than fourth in the League while he was there, but the championship went to Merseyside in all five seasons. He won the FA Cup twice, with victories over Brighton in 1983 and Everton in 1985, and his team set a club record of 10 League victories in a row at the start of the 1985/86 campaign.

Although he was a big spender, Atkinson broke the £1 million barrier for a player only once - for Bryan Robson. Poor form in 1986/87 cost him his job and he was replaced by Alex Ferguson on 6th November, 1986. He returned to West Brom and went on to manage Atletico Madrid, Sheffield Wednesday (twice), Aston Villa and Coventry City.
