Duncan, Scott - 1932 - 1937

After making his name playing football for Newcastle, Glasgow Rangers and Dumbarton, Scott Duncan spent five years as manager at Old Trafford. The club had just agreed to appoint as chairman a local businessman, James Gibson, who invested a large amount of his own money in getting United out of the financial trouble it was then in, including paying the players' wages.

Scott Duncan, as an ex-player who knew what the game was all about, seemed the perfect manager for United. He took over from Walter Crickmer in August 1932 but, despite big spending on new players, almost brought catastrophe. In 1931/32, United were 12th in Division Two. In 1932/33, they had climbed back to sixth, but in 1934, his side finished 20th in Division Two, only one point away from relegation to Division Three. It was, and still is, United's lowest-ever League position.
