Murphy, Jimmy - 1958

Although he was never officially appointed manager, the part Jimmy Murphy played in the rebuilding after Munich is enough to earn him his place alongside others who were.

Murphy spurned many offers of managerial posts at other clubs to continue his work at Old Trafford. He joined Busby's coaching staff after the Second World War, and at the time of the air disaster was also manager of Wales.

Sir Matt's right-hand man, he held the post of assistant manager at Manchester United until his retirement in 1971.
