“The very best of TBPS 2006”

For our final meeting of 2006, each member is requested to bring in a print of their favourite photo, which they have taken, during the year. They need not be mounted, all that is required is that you give a brief description about how and why you took the photo, simple eh!. (If you can’t make up your mind which is you favourite, you can bring in as many as you want, as long as you tell us about the photo) Any members not bringing in a photo must pay a forfeit, that being the buying of one pint of Guinness for Colum. So either we get Colum totally drunk or people start brining in photos!

“Christmas Party”

Well tonight we gave all that photography stuff a rest for a change. How about that Mr. President! All members welcomed to our Annual Finger Food and Drinks Evening.  We gathered downstairs in the Bridge for 8:30, so don’t be late, as otherwise I will eat all the nibblesJ! So come along it should be a great night!

“Flash through the looking glass”

Tonight Paul completed his Christmas Lectures with part two on lenses. Once again he managed to confuse all and sundry with a bewildering array of optical instruments. General prognosis was that 1) I love the lens that came with my camera, and 2) Santa, please bring me an EF70/300 IS DO. The Canon shooters got to road test a few of the lenses on show, although the lighting in the room was not the best, which only highlights the importance of having a good blaster, sorry flash gun, at your side.

Talking of flash guns, Colum was able to solve the problem with Theresa’s errant EX580. With this in mind we intend asking Colum to give us a special lecture on the use of flash units early in the New Year, so make sure you place your order for one with Santa so you won’t be left out!

“Waiting for Micko
Many congratulations to Theresa on finishing second runner up in the Clarke Oil Calendar Competition. Be warned though Colum has now put you down as a banker for the next Licentia Distinctions in April, so you better get busy on that panel!

“All Hail, Peter The Great!”

Once again our judges for the Tommy Byrne Memorial Trophy were left in an unenviable position, how to choose from the high quality field of fifty one entries for the Society’s top photographic prize. After long deliberation and the even tenser calculation of results, the worthy winner was duly crowned. Peter’s “Arklow Sunset” rightly achieved top prize for the excellence of its composition and the stunning capture of the sky afire. The standard has been set high and any aspirants for Peter’s crown will have to work very hard over the next twelve months if they intend to capture this trophy! The Society is rightly proud of the quality of the work on display this evening and we look forward to even greater successes in 2007, both for individuals and in team competition.

Theresa was just shaded out into second place with her “ Millennium Monument ” while Joy was overjoyed at achieving third spot for her “ Tropical Garden ” scene. Maybe Colum will buy her that new camera now after all?

Special thanks to May, Julie and Denis for being our extra special judges for the evening and for their generous donation of prizes.

So in the end what did we learn? Well, he who always carries his camera and does not miss Society meetings has a head start to happiness (but talent doesn’t hurt either though)!  Congratulations again Peter!

“Violet and Vibrator’s”

Colum finally gave lecture number three for the Intermediate Certificate, which involved colour theory. Dealing with a slightly giddy crowd, Colum manfully explained all things bright and colourful. Detailing the primary colours, hues, shades and luminance it proved to be a fairly technical study. At one stage there was open revolt, with the audience asserting that a “violet” curtain was indeed “muddy brown”. True to form Colum expertly dodged the criticism and informed those unbelieving scallywags that what we were looking at was a shade, but that the real hue was violet! To round off the lecture, Colum set us a challenge to be completed for early January. Namely to produce a photo containing the three primary colours (no hues or shades mind you) of Red, Blue and Yellow. Just to make it a little more challenging the colours are the subjects and not the objects that may be primary coloured, in other words he would like to see an abstract. A photo of a beach ball, or a teddy with a beach ball will be burnt at the stake!

With the coming of the festive period, Paul brought in a bag of tricks to show what to ask Santa for this Christmas. Most people seemed particularly interested in the close focus filter or dioptre, which can turn your telephoto lens into a macro lens. But most amusement was generated by the “Artic Butterfly” sensor cleaning system, I just can’t figure why something long and with a vibrating head should generate such a reaction J

“Medallion Man”
Tonight was a great opportunity to praise our heroes from Port Laoise. Both Stewart and Peter (Julie unfortunately was unavailable) were roundly congratulated for their success’s. Members also had a chance to see the two club panel’s, with particular interest being shown in our excellent colour panel. Looking forward to 2007 our next goal is to a least qualify for the National League Finals, this will really show we can start to mix it with the big boys!

Paul was also chastised for calling TP, “TeePee”, and a small bribe was conferred to ensure a non occurrence of the inappropriate pseudonym. So thus forth the name will be “Flash Power”, well she does need to be quick to track down those rascal dogs!

“A Norwegian Pop Star, but no Beatles ”

Once again we remain in the debt of Willie for another excellently researched and presented Photoshop seminar. This was his third edition and focused mainly on work flow, particularly the use of Adobe Bridge . Encompassing renaming files and preparation of slideshows he also managed to squeeze in an exposure and sharpening routine using LAB. We are looking forward to his next show already, but we do have a request that he return the “Fab Four” to their rightful spot on his desktop, nuff said!

Ines, also returned to the fold, with the addition of a Sopy Alpha 100 and some excellent black and white portrait shots.

“Intricate panelling and some fine sharpening”

Many thanks to our guest lecturer for the evening, Mr Mark Sedgwick FIPF EFIAP, who roundly entertained all present with his guide on how to put a panel together. Afterwards was a session with those members submitting work in November. By all accounts one has a shoe in and another's nearly there, with one more still looking for two more shots.

Mark also gave a brief tutorial on using LAB in Photoshop to sharpen photographs, so it was really good to see the way those in the know judge a photo!

“What goes on on tour stays on tour”

The Moonlight and Magic Evening seems to have been a great success, with all the people I have spoken to having a wonderful evening! So congratulations to the organisers who I am sure are glad of the rest giving their huge commitment to the event over the last three months, so take a bow!

If you really want to know what scandal took place on the evening, well your luck is out here, you should have bought a ticket. The good news is that you will have the opportunity to do the same again in 2007, so get in early and book you tickets as they are sure to go like hot cakes due to the success of this year’s event. You can be sure I have already booked mine, first class Santiago via Buenos Aires J

“Sexism rules!”

Well since I was denied right of entry to this competition, I have decided to boycott reporting the outcome! Or put another way, since I was in the U.S.A., I don’t know what happened!
