“I won’t dance, don’t ask me!”

Tonight saw the judging of our “People Portraits Competition”. We had the great pleasure of welcoming Mr. Eddie Fitzgerald as our guest judge, and after confusing him a little (n.b. sack the competition secretary), we had the benefit of his considerable experience in evaluating the strengths and weaknesses of each of the submissions. I am sure that all those present went away with a greater appreciation for people photography, particularly the emphasis on trying to capture the humanity of the subject.  Once again Larissa shows her particular affinity with this type of subject, and her beautifully composed classroom scene rightly earned top spot. (See the gallery soon)  Willie Doyle collected second spot, with Paul Sheedy coming third.

Also, due to the large numbers of members that could not make the “Moonlight and Magic Ball” in August, it has been postponed until October 6Th. It should prove to be another excellent evening, with a few photographic surprises just to add to the magic. (P.S. anybody got access to a top hat and a bunny?) (Secretary)

“Fawning over Canvas”

Colum returns, and like Baldrick he has a cunning plan! Qualification for the “Intermediate Certificate” and entrance to the senior rank of members will be via the completion of a scorecard of relevant assignments. Full details will be given at Colum’s next tutorial on July 26th. Congratulations are in order for Willie on the publication of his shot of a fawn. The framed copy was truly gorgeous and a serious contender for our Nature Competition. (Nature Competition
Sept 28th 2006 ).

“Our Poles, their Poles and Fine Art Paper please”

Intermediate tutorial class number three focused on the black arts of home printing. This time I know for sure that all members got something from the evening, even if it was only a print of one of their photos. The evening proved to be our most successful computer based tutorial to date, nobody fell asleep. But again that may also have had something to do with the
Germany v Poland match playing quietly in the corner! We managed to get excellent results from images from Peter and Tim, but I think the honour’s for the evening go to “Our German”, Ines, for her “Yellow Flower” (again please visit the Gallery).

So far June has proved to be a very busy month here in the TBPS. Our exhibition in the Arklow Business Enterprise Centre has proven to be both a commercial and critical success. Not only have we managed to sell eight photos, but have received many tributes from the hundreds of people that have viewed the exhibition. Due to the quality of our worked we have managed to obtain a permanent space within the centre to showcase our work. Within the coming week we will start to rotate the images, so we would be grateful if members could bring in alternate framed photos so that we can maintain a freshness to our display. Also remember that we only have one month before our big exhibition in the art gallery, so all those that haven’t got framed examples of their work need to get busy. Should you need any advice or assistance with getting your images ready please do not hesitate to approach one of the senior members, as we will be only to glad to help.

Not made it to the meetings in June? Then you missed,

Dolphins in the sky with Jenny” (Beatles pun intended).

We had a very successful tutorial class out at Kilmichael Point, practising some of the techniques expounded by our guru in chief Mr. Colum D’Alton AIPF. I think most members gained something from the evening, particularly some lovely images of the setting sun. So what has all that to do with Dolphin’s then, I hear you say? Well just go to the Gallery section of this website, and under Jenny Bardon you will find true enlightenment, Grasshopper!

Aren’t you sorry you missed out now! (Secretary)

31st

The first of the Intermediate Tutorial Classes took place tonight with Colum outlining the course work and reasons behind photography.  Paul will take over for the next few weeks with practical sessions and digital workshops.

Project Work 'Little Critters' was brought in and we had a range of goslings on the local duck pond, flies, butterflies and wriggle things you don't want to find in your pants!

Tonight we had 'Wonderful Wicklow' Photographic Competition sponsored by Cairdre Le Cheile Bealtaine Festival.  Congratulations to 1st Stewart Case; 2nd Julie New; 3rd Paul Sheedy and many thanks to our Judges and Town Major.  We wish the Festival all the very best and look forward to the week ahead.

'Colum in the Hot Seat' - Members had the opportunity to ask Colum a question about anything, as he is an authority on most things (particularly witchcraft). So this was an ideal opportunity, before the resumption of our classes later in the month, to ask any of those niggling little questions that trouble your sleep over photography. (Secretary)

14th - 19th

The Bealtine Festival Exhibition in the Brockage Resource Centre in Laragh went really well and proved very popular there.  Many thanks to the Staff there and we wish them continued success as this festival is sure to grow year by year.

'Symmetry' - again the creative juices were really flowing with some excellent images on show. The standout ones were Stewart’s “ Brooklyn Bridge ”, Julie’s “ Johnstown Castle ”, Willies “Tulip” and my particular favourite Larissa’s “Converse Trainers” (but enough about my foot fetishism). Next up, on May 31’st is “Little Critters of a non human form”, so get your thinking caps, or macro lenses, on. (Secretary)

5th-7th

The TBPS had a great weekend starting on Friday the 5th where we attended a surprise birthday party for Mrs May Byrne.  May was really overwhelmed and we extend our Best Wishes for a Very Happy Birthday to her.

Kilmore Quay beckoned the following day with a touch of rain which soon cleared.  Due to the strong wind on Sunday morning members were unable to clear the boat to get on the Saltees but instead were treated to views of the whole island from the sea and some satisfying photos were produced.  Plan B came into force and once out of Kilmore we headed to Johnstown Castle where a very pleasant walk and photo sessions were completed.

Many thanks to members for turning up on the day/s as I know some came down on the morning in order to get to the island.

3rd

A great turn out tonight for the 'Filters Practical'.  Shame about the weather though, although not raining it was completely overcast which slowed the shutter speeds even more.  As the vast if not all members were using tripods so hopefully they'll get some great results.

Final preparation/notice for our trip to the Saltees: Dinner at the Hotel Saltees at 6.30pm, Boat leaves Sunday morning 11am weather depending.  Bring: wet weather gear; walking shoes/hiking boots; packed lunch; camera! film/batteries/spare batteries/charged batteries/memory card(s)/tripod etc. whichever applies and anything else you can think of that I've left out!!

Film is officially dead, only five entries (and only three of these new shots) for the competition. We are very grateful for those members that brought slides along on the night for the show (as opposed to the competition), as indeed we were rewarded with a wide selection of beautiful images that can only be delivered by this particular medium. Undaunted we will arrange further slide shows throughout the coming year, as this is one analogue discipline that really rewards study and practice.

Many Congratulations to Paul Sheedy on receiving his Licentiate in Mallow at the weekend.  It's becoming tougher each occasion and it's great to have the effort rewarded for the hard work that goes into it - Well Done Paul.

The A.G.M. affirmed the committee as Robert Hudson (President), Stewart Case (Chairperson), Julie New (Treasurer), Paul Sheedy ( Secretary ) and Larissa O’Duffy (P.R.O.) for 2006. Agreed aims for the coming year to included fundraising and purchase of studio lighting; Intermediate Tutorial Classes to bring current members to the next level and to conduct clinical classes to help members develop their skills.

The practical session of 'Sunset by the River' involved Peter and Paul (no sign of Mary), honing their low light shooting down by the river bank. Both were pleased with the opportunity availed of for practice and with many of the shots they achieved, particularly as the swans were so keen to have their pictures taken. The other members seemed to prefer the low lights of the bar instead though!  So just for future reference everyone meet at the Bar first!

12th

Due to unforeseen events the A.G.M. could not go ahead as scheduled so will be held next week instead.  Larissa did, however, officially hand over her position as Secretary to Paul Sheedy who now handles the e-mails and any other queries current or potential members may have.  The Best of Luck Paul.  Larissa will continue as P.R.O. and webmaster (unless there are any takers for that too?!!! :o) Yes, cheeky I know!)

5th

A very interesting 'Macro Practical Night tonight' with different subjects for members to capture.  Talk is continuing for the Cairdre le Cheile festival coming up and we have secured a venue for our 'Bealtine' exhibition (25th May-2nd June) more to follow on this.
