GAEILGE
Dia daoibh go
léir,
Is mise Máire Nic Giollaphádraig. Conaím i gCill Eoin. Táim
dhá bhliain déag d'aois agus téim go dtí Scoil Náisiúnta an Fraoch.
Táim i rang a sé. Is maith liom peil agus ríomhairí. Tá cúigear i mo
chlann; Mamaí, Daidí, Alva, Freda agus mé féin. Tá madra againn agus
Flo is ainm di. Is maith liom Manchester United. Mí ó shin chuaigh mé
go dtí Old Trafford agus chonaic mé Alex Ferguson.
Hello to everyone,
I am Moyra Fitzpatrick. I live in Killone. I am twelve years old and
I go to the Heath National School. I am in Sixth Class. I like football
and computers. There are five in my family. Mammy, Daddy, Alva, Freda
and myself. We have a dog and Flo is her name. I like Manchester United.
I went to Old Trafford last month and I saw Alex Freguson.
Irish
(or Gaelic or Gaeilge ) is the first official language of
Ireland, but only about 80,000 people speak it in their everyday lives.
These people mostly live in the Irish-speaking areas along the west coast. An Irish-speaking area is known as a Gaeltacht. In recent years, there has been a huge
increase in the number of Gaelscoileanna (all-Irish schools)
outside the Irish-speaking areas. In 25 years, the number of these
schools has jumped from 16 to 150. Today over 24,000 children attend
all-Irish schools, so maybe in the future Irish will be more popular
than it is now.
