U 10 FINAL

(Our slightly biased account)

The Portlaw N.S. under 10s played the final on the 20th of November. It was a dark evening. There was heavy rain and strong winds. The pitch at Cleaboy was full of puddles and was very mucky.

Coach Mr Curran put out a strong team to play against Killea. “Killea were dirty; they were cogging us with their boots,” says Thomas Murphy, Portlaw N.S. centre half forward. But Portlaw proved to be the better team.

In the first half, the game opened with Killea scoring a point. Then Portlaw captain Richard Fitzpatrick lobbed the goalkeeper twice. Corner forward Luke Duggan volleyed the ball home with a left kick for Portlaw. In the second half, Thomas Murphy got around the goalkeeper and buried the ball in the bottom right corner of the Killea net. With only five minutes to go, Killea scored a goal to make the final score: Portlaw 4-1 to Killea 1-1. The jerseys were stuck to the players, but the Portlaw boys didn’t mind. They performed a lap of honour despite the bad weather.
