IMEACHTAÍ LASMUIGH
Ionad an Phiarsaigh in Shielbaggan, Co. Wexford is an
Outdoor Pursuits Centre. Boys from 3rd class in our school visited
the centre in November 1989. They enjoyed rock-climbing, orienteering,
hillwalking and canoeing, as well as other water activities, so much
that their 6th class counterparts were brought there during the Easter
break in 1990. |

Kilkenny CBS has brought 3rd and 6th classes to Shielbaggan every
year since then. The project began under the guidance of one of
our teachers, Mrs. Ann Grace, and parents, teachers and members
of our Parents' Council and Board of Management have all helped
out with the event since then. "Health is wealth." This
is certainly true and in today's society, with its increasing demands,
there is an even greater need than ever before to teach our children
how to organise leisure time for themselves and how to appreciate
the beauty of our environment.

During the last eleven years we have seen children,
who did not have an interest in regular sports, excel at adventure
sports. Some have ended up choosing a career based on one or more
of these events. The time in Shielbaggan has improved teacher/pupil
relationships as we integrate with one another in a relaxed and fun-filled
environment. Regularly children who have had a 'low profile' in class
have come home 'new heroes'. This has had a major impact on their
self esteem. Finally, why go back year after year? Because it's fun!
And laughter is the best medicine. |
