The choir was founded in 1983 by its present conductor, Mr. Seamus
Brennan. It consists of thirty six boys whose ages range from nine
to fourteen. Before joining, each boy is given two years preliminary
training after which, having passed a series of tests, he may then
participate in the actual choir life: the public performances and
the concert tours. At the end of their time in the primary school
many boys continue as members for a further year or two. |
Their repertoire is divided evenly between sacred and secular.
It encompasses church music of all styles, ranging from works of
old masters up to contemporary compositions; and it also includes
classical, folk, traditional and popular works. The choir's style
and versatility is reflected in the variety of performances which
has brought it to every major city in the British Isles: Dublin,
Cork, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds
and London. In addition to thorough musical training the choir places
particular emphasis on the boys' human development. Particularly
capable choirboys are selected to take over tasks, offices and responsibilities.
Head-Chorister, Deputy Head-Chorister and Group Leaders are given
special badges to mark their respective ranks; while qualities of
good behaviour, readiness to help, responsible co-operation and a harmonious climate form the basis of the choir's
educational philosophy. |
