It was the seventh occasion that the Rebel County had won a replayed Munster Final in 11 attempts and they did so with fine team play, resilience and no little skill as the temperatures reached 27 degrees on the banks of the Lee. James Masters was the hero for Cork, hitting 1-6 as the Rebel defence held the Kerry attack at bay throughout - so much so that Kerry's forward line at the end bore little resemblance to that which started the game. 21st June - St. Mary's Drawn At Home In All There Championships With Seniors Getting Renard On Wednesday night last the draws for the South Kerry senior, junior and minor championships were made and certainly through up some interesting ties. The draw for the Corcoran’s Furniture and Carpet Minor Championship was made first live on Radio Kerry and holders Waterville were first out of the cup and were paired with St. Michaels/Foilmore, with two of the tougher teams out of the way St. Mary’s were drawn next at home to Sneem/Derrynane, on paper this draw would be what the Mary’s are looking for with the visitors after coming off the back of a poor County League campaign, but when it comes to the Championship there are no easy games. The other ties in the draw paired Valentia with Dromid, and Renard with Skellig Rangers. Next draw to be decided was the Junior Championship, with somewhat of the same outcome being thrown up for the Mary’s when they were first out of the hat with a home draw against Sneem. St. Mary’s juniors look like the team to beat in the Championship and the home advantage will suit them very much with an undefeated record to date at home. Else where in the draw Dromid will be at home to Valentia, St. Micheals/Foilmore will play hosts to Skellig Rangers and Renard were paired with Waterville. Finally the big one, the South Kerry Senior Football Championship, after going out in the preliminary round last year against Waterville the Mary’s were anxious the avoid coming out of the cup during the early stages and that they did with Dromid and Sneem having to play the early game with winners set to travel to Foilmore to take on St. Michaels/Foilmore. Derrynane were next out with the home advantage to neighbours Waterville, and with all these out of the way the signals were ominous that St. Mary’s would be paired with closes and fiercest rivals Renard. The sides last meet in the South Kerry Championship in 2004 when Renard had what looked like a controllable lead at half time but the determination of the town team lead them to victory with a great second half performance, St. Mary’s went on to reach the final that year only to be defeated by Dromid in the decider. The final two teams out of the hat on the night were Valentia and Waterville with the Island playing host to this one. The Minor and Senior Championships aren’t scheduled to take place till later on in the year while the Junior Championship is set to take place when the County League and Barrett and McElligott Cups come to conclusion. More Comming Soon....... 21st June - South Kerry Through To Yet Another Final And County Championship Draws During the week in South Kerry matters, the U14’s advance to the County Championship final when they overcame Eoghan Rua in the semi-final and will play West Kerry next Saturday at 6:00 in Beaufort. The second half was much of the same and saw the home side come out on top on a scoreline of 1-8 v 0-6. St. Mary’s scores on the night came from John ‘Casur’ O’Sullivan, Sean Donal O’Shea, Kevin Keane, and Sean Cournane. The Late Sean O’Sullivan There was high level of regret felt throughout his native Iveragh when news broke of the death in California of Sean Tadgh O’Sullivan formerly of the Fairfield. Sean was the proud holder of 2 South Kerry Senior Championship medals won with his beloved St. Mary’s in 1949 and ’51. But like so many of his colleagues of that era emigration was to bring an end to his footballing career. Prior to going to the United States he worked in the Sive Mineral Waters factory with Willie Courtney, Tadgh Shea, Mikey Sheehan, Sean O’Shea and former Iveragh press correspondent John Ring all now sadly journed on to his heavenly home. Sean was to grab many sporting headlines in horse racing in his adopted country as a trainer . His greatest moment came in the first running of the Arlington Million when his change ‘The Bath’ was beaten by a short head by John Henny. Sean was a regular visitor to the Curragh and Goffs sales. The familys racing tradition is now in the safe hands of his daughter who has taken charge of his stables. This understandably was a source of immense pride to him. He is survived by his wife Mary and three daughters, sister Mary Bridget (Cahersiveen) and brother Micheal (Cork). May the sod of California rest lightly on this proud son of Bar Na Straide. The sides will meet again next Saturday at Páirc Uí Rinn and both sides will need to show marked improvement.
Kerry started much the brighter mainly thanks to our own Bryan Sheehan, who started at full forward but changed to midfield straight away, and built up a 0-3 to 0-0 lead. 9th March - St. Mary's Club Meeting. After several injurys and absent players St. Mary's will hopefully welcome new faces back to the side. St. Mary's will once again be without Bryan Sheehan who will be in action for the County U21's earlier in the day (see below) and we wish hime the best of luck. Throw in, in Derrynane is 4:30 on Saturday. Please note South Kerry League Game V Valentia Is Off. 9th March - Munster U21 Football Championship Quater Final Preview. Kerry renew old rivalry once again with near neigbours Cork in the Munster U21 Football Championship, this weekend in Killarney. Kerry’s last Munster crown at this grade came back in 2002 while the opposition are going for three in-a-row provincial titles. Kerry havent got the best head to head record with Cork in this competition as Kerry have been knocked out by Cork for the past two years in the provinical stages, but hopefully under the guideance of new boss John O'Dwyer (Waterville) they can reverse this trend. The Kerry side will line out with a lot of expeirence head, and none more than our own Bryan Sheehan, who since South Kerry winning the County U21 Championship will captain the side. This will be a big day for the Over The Water man and hopefully he will have a lot more days wearing the captains armband before the year is out with the Kerry U21's. Both teams were very evenly matched going into the game with the main battle being between Gary O'Driscoll (SR) and Brian Curran (St. M), both these players are being highly tipped for great things in the future. Spa got the perfect start when Niall Mahony goaled after four minutes, but St. Mary's Bryan Sheehan began to spring into action scoring some fantastic points while Maurice Fitzgerald set Rat Keane up in front of goal to bring the game back on level terms after 10 minutes. But as the second half got under way Spa had the upper hand and a huge fitness advantage over the home side, this proved towards the end and when Kerry Minor Micheal O'Donoghue punched the ball to the back of the net St. Mary's were dead and buried. The Cahersiveen outfit then might as well not half come back out with the home team running riot throughout the second half and only for a last minute goal from Austin Constable, his second of the game, St. Mary’s would have went home highly embarrsed. This was a performance most unlike the St. Mary’s and a very long time since a team wearing the blue and white only managed 2 points in a game, although some excuse could be made due to the absents of 6 influential players Liam Sheehan, Steven Curran, John Alan O’Sullivan, Bryan Sheehan, Paul Mahony and Rory Keating due to exams and other commitments. The Mary’s stuck with the Rahillys until 12 minutes remaining when Mark Fitzgerald dinked around Liam Sheehan and John M Clifford to settle the game with a well taken goal.
