The effect of a catalyst on a system in equilibrium

A catalyst speeds up the rate of a reaction, without being used up in the reaction itself.

With this definition in mind, we should note that there is no effect to the addition of a cataylst when a system is in equilibrium.

The only effect to a system, not in equilibrium, is that it will reach equilibrium faster.

The concentrations of all species will remain constant, since the catalyst will increase both forward and backward equations by the same rate.
