This project involves using the topic 'Stories, Myths and Legends' to create a scene which tells a story using the lego materials. Day1. The children came up with ideas for a story/stories we could illustrate.

We led them into the area of local history as we were interested in having a strong link between the control technology project and other areas of the curriculum. Using the Mullinahone area as our starting point, the children came up with four main landmarks and one historical figure we could tell a story about:

1. Sliabh na mBan (Women's Mountain) at the foot of which our school is built. There is a legend attaching to the mountain explaining how it got its name, a legend involving the most important of all heroes in Celtic mythology, Fionn Mac Cumhail.

2. Killaghy Castle. Originally a Norman Castle, it is the finest building in the area, and is now a guesthouse. The children felt we could illustrate the farm attaching to the castle, with animals etc.

3. Carraigmoclear. A hill overlooking Mullinahone, and the scene of a battle against the British forces, as part of the 1798 Rebellion against British rule in Ireland.

4. Charles J. Kickham(1828-1882), poet, novelist and nationalist was from area, and there is a tree, locally known as Kickham's Tree, where on his daily walk of the area he would sit and meditate before carrying on his walk back to Mullinahone.

The children felt we could build a model of Kickham which would follow his walking route and rest at his tree.We intended to have a large scene incorporating these three main stories, but also models of other landmarks in the area would be built. The children chose which area of the project they would like to be involved in.
There was a positive atmosphere in the classroom as pupils enjoyed embarking on a new challenge!!
