[BO:Mallette:BO]
The Mallets were an ancient Norman tribe distinguished by a terrible
weapon - a long hammer with a point at the end. Early in the 8th
century, Charles, son of the elder Pepin, Mayor of the Royal Palace,
led the army of French and Germans against the Saracens. Having
occupied Spain, he planted the faith in the west of France, driving
the invaders, for which he received the name,[BO: [IT:Martel:IT]:BO]
meaning driven, which is the origin of the name.
Charles Martel's son Pipin, by the voice of Rome, was declared the
legal[BO: King of France:BO]. Pepin's son Charlemagne, ascending the
throne, created and protected the Roman pontiff, by whose authority
the papacy reigned over France and Rome for more than 1,000 years, a
papal millenium.
The name was Latinized, called "Maillett" or "Mallett," also spelled
"Malet," but never "Mallette" until it was Angelo-Saxonized.
David and his family lived at Rochelle, France. He was Commissary of
the IV Division in the Army of Louis XIV, a high position. His sons
were also in the Army. When the Edict of Nantes revoked the sacred
privileges of the Hugenots in 1685, horrible religious persecution
followed. He was warned by [IT:Le Tellier :IT] (a judge appointed by
the King), not to go near "those preachers." In 1686 400 officers,
including one of David's sons was killed on the "wheel". One of
David's brothers and a brother-in-law died the same death - their
wives and children were also killed, some by burning. Preserving the
sacred Bible in a footstool, David and four sons escaped to England,
while John, according to one article, hiding in a carpenters kit to
avoid fatality, boarded a ship to America. An other article says he
brought a brother, a nephew Peter, and his household with him, which
seems to be true.
