The Black Headed Gull - Sleibin

by Janice Gilbert

I am a black headed gull. My upperparts are grey and I have black tipped primary feathers. My beak and legs are red. I eat fish, worms, molluscs, insects, seeds and other foods. I like to visit the dump for scraps of food. I live in Ireland on the beach in the sand dunes. Some of my friends come to Ireland from Northern Europe in Winter.

I nest on the ground. I nest in groups with my friends. I lay three greenish brown eggs and the chicks are wet when they hatch. They are speckled brown so they can hide in the stones when they are small. I help them out of the shell.

Black headed gulls are very common gulls. Look out for us. Remember that we only have black heads in summer. In winter we have a black spot behind our eye.
