The Starling - Druid

by Jennifer O'Hara

The starling is a resident bird. That means that he lives in Ireland all year round. Huge flocks come from the north of Europe to visit us in winter.

The starling is a busy, noisy bird which lives in flocks. It can become a pest in towns. Great flocks gather on winter evenings on overhead wires, aerials or along rooftops chattering and calling to each other before they move off to roost. Its plumage is beautiful. It is speckled and when the sun shines you can see lots of colours. The starling clicks and whistles and sometimes imitates the songs and calls of other birds.

Starlings nest in crevices and lay four to six pale blue eggs.

Starlings feed on the ground in large flocks. They eat insects, worms and slugs. They also eat grain, fruit, berries and scraps. Some starlings come and eat in our school playground.
