The Rook - Rucach

by Lisa Christie

The rook is a member of the crow family. His plumage is completely black with a purple or greenish tint and he has grey legs. He has shaggy feathers on the top of his legs. He has a bare patch near his long pointed grey beak. He is about 46cms long.

Rooks live together in high trees. Their home is called a rookery. A rookery could have 1,000 nests. Rooks will never nest in trees that might fall down. Rooks are very noisy birds calling "caw-caw" to each other.

They feed on root crops, berries, insects, worms, slugs and rubbish.

We see lots of rooks in our playground.
