The Blackbird - Ceirseach

The blackbird is a garden bird and is a member of the thrush family. The blackbird is with us all year in Ireland.

The male blackbird has all black plumage which contrasts with his bright orange-yellow beak and yellow eye ring. The female blackbird is a dull brown colour with a pale throat and slightly paler underparts. Her beak is dark with a dull yellowish base. Blackbirds are about 25cms long.

Blackbirds eat worms, insects, fruit and berries.

The nest is built by the hen. It is usually built in a bush but can be found in many places: trees, windowsills, on the ground or even in a pile of wood. The nest is made of sticks, rags, plastic and is lined with mud and grass. The hens lay four to six blueish eggs with brown spots. They hatch after thirteen to fifteen days.

This very common bird is one of our finest song birds. The male especially likes to sing.
