The Magpie - Snag Breac

Magpies are black and white with a long tail. They are about 45cms long. Magpies are found in the country and in towns. Their call is like a rusty gate. We have magpies in our playground. They are newcomers to Ireland, unknown here before the 17th century. Some people think magpies are pests. They eat insects, slugs and seeds as well as eggs and small birds.

A pair of magpies are usually found together. Nestbuilding starts early in January. Magpies sometimes work on the nest for a few months. Their nests are made of sticks. After the eggs hatch the family stays together. When the magpies are old enough they leave their parents and set up their own homes.
