[40] According to his biography, IRA MEEKS was born in Dryden, Tompkinsco., NY though his father Daniel MEEKS was on the Hector census in1820, apparently newly married (one female in household). Ira'sfather Daniel moved to Michigan in 1832 or 1835, & Ira went to livewith his grandfather in Enfield, Tompkins co., NY - the grandfatherwas most likely Jesse BROAS. (His parents are believed to haveseparated when Ira was an infant & Daniel married his next doorneighbor's daughter, Elsa Miller, by 1822.) Ira learned theblacksmith trade at Enfield Center, Tompkins co., NY, probably underinstruction from his uncle John P. BROAS who was a blacksmith there. After that, Ira lived in Howard, Steuben co., NY for six years (hisgrandfather Edward Meeks lived there from 1830 on); then Ira returnedto Enfield, Tompkins co. for four more years, until about 1848-49.He married JANE ANN SMITH in 1850 and lived in Cayuta, NY where he hada blacksmith shop for 18 years. Jane died in 1863 leaving him withthree young sons. He married SARAH E. HOUSE in Feb. 1864, and afourth son, SEWARD MEEKS, was born in 1865. (Seward Meeks married MARYLOUISE BARNS, daughter of W. HAWLEY BARNS, and had no knownchildren.--They are buried in Montour Cemetery.) Ira was listed inan 1868/69 directory in Montour with a house on Mill Street. - But hewas on the 1875 census in Cayuta also. (His death cert. says he cameto Montour Falls c1889.) He farmed and worked as a blacksmith & wagonmaker into his eighties. His cousin Emma J. Broas, age 27, was amember of his household on the 1865 Cayuta census. George McCutcheonwas in his household on the 1875 Cayuta census & also the 1900 MontourFalls census - George was his half-brother.
[44] His death cert. shows his birthplace as Howard, NY, but this must bean error, since Dryden is given more often.
[45]
On the death cert. says he died of a 17-day illness, Uremic Poisoning(kidney disease), at age 86yr-11mo-23days...just before his 87thbirthday.
